Dear Tom, We, too, share the same ancestor with Samuel Dally and I also can take my lineage (direct) back to Simon D'Aille (d bef 1639) in South Belgium, but I also connect to Simon I de Clermont D'Ailly (bro of Matilda of Ponthieu) indirectly. His parents were Renaud II de Clermont (d abt 1162) and Clemence of Bar-Le-Duc (d aft January 20, 1182/83).My direct line is through Adeliza de Clermont (Renaud I's sister).
From reading your messages on GenForum you probably have as much or more French research than I do.However, the following is a brief sketch of my loose connections:
To preface:It is difficult to understand why there is not a record of the D'Ailly family chronology. They held titles of their own and had five distinctive Coat of Arms. They also had high alliances with many families in France.
They married into the descendants of Philippe 'the Bold'(dau Yolande batarde de Bourgogne d November 3, 1470), married June 1, 1456 Gravenhage, Jean d'Ailly, d 1492, (son of Raoul) AND d'Ailly's also married into the family of Philippe 'the Good'.They also married into the Bethune family.Margerite d'Ailly, Antoine's daughter, married Francois de Coligny.
You probably know about the infamous St. Bartholomew Massacre of 1572 when many Huguenots were killed during the wedding of Henry of Navarre, a Huguenot, to Marguerite de Valois.Henry's mother was Jeanne d'Albert and it was the d'Albert lion which was placed on the d'Ailly COA for the new creation 1711.
It appears my d'Ailly's did not follow their noble line, but left due to their belief in religious freedom.I have followed Jean (b abt 1615) to London and then to New Amsterdam in 1644.
There is every indication that at least Charles' (d. 1522), son of Jean (d 1492), line left the Roman Church.
I actually enter into the Dally family when Mary Elizabeth Dally (1808-1856) married Asa Runyon Harned. They lived in New Jersey so as a result I have many families I research in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, etc.
It seems my message grew longer than I had planned, but hope this will give you an overview of my research.Do you believe we have any information to share?
