One of the things you do not know is the names of William's (1743-1840) children by his first wife. Some list them as this or that but there is no listing. In fact, the name of his first wife is really not known although a lot of folks say it was Rachel G. HOWE but there is not proof of that assignment.
It is hard for me to fathom that William did not name a son by his first wife after not only his grandfather, Robert, his older brother, Robert, or his father-in-law, also named, Robert, if he did indeed married Rachel HOWE.
There are just a lot of question marks about this family, especailly the children of his first wife, whatever her name was. There is not as much of a question mark about the children of his second wife, Mary MELTON, but there are still some unanswered qhestions, even here.
It is almost, as if, the family of the second wife took precedence over the children of his first wife.We know the DANIELL family of Emanuel County, GA are descendants of William and his first wife.In fact, two of his sons may have ended up in Emanuel County, GA.We alsoloose track of the DAVIS family of Burke County, GA which was collateral with this DANIEL family.
We have seperated the ERWIN connection of long standing with this DANIELL family and have assigned it, correctly, to the DANIELL family of Hancock County, GA, who were actually O'DANIELS from Fairfax County, VA.
I know who my bunch are and who they married.ERWINS do come into play in my DANIEL or DANIELL bunch in Burke, as does the WISE family. In fact, two of my DANIEL girls married two WISE boys.I also have a later JEFFERIES in my overall bunch -- a James Gould Jefferies of Comer, GA married Sarah Richter HUNTER as her second husband AFT 1905.Her first husband was a Louis Dugas COLE.
One of the DANIELS I have really looked at was William's brother, Robert (1741-1804) who married Sarah Amelia LEWIS.However, I never could get the support in the collaterals I wanted to see in this bunch and they also seem to to have stayed in the Horry County, SC area.
However, I did pick up a collateral connection between this DANIELL family and the WALTONS and PONDERS over in Morgan County, GA.Sarah Allen MALCOLM married Atlas A. DANIELL and her brother, William MALCOLM, married Louisa Elizabeth PONDER, d/o John Harris PONDER and Lucy Ann CARLTON of Morgan County, GA and this you all over my bunch in Morgan County, GA.
I have a full listing of your bunch in my PAF so I know the names of most, if not all, of their children and basically where they later migrated to.Some of them match the profile of my bunch, some don't.The one thing that makes me continue to look at them is all of the Charleston connections in my bunch (ALSTONS, WHITES, BLAKES, PICQUETS, DUPRES, etc), as well as the island trading families in my overall family.Otherwise, I would have dropped them in a New York minute from any consideration.
I think one of the big questions I have always had about this family is the naming pattern. With the exception of John, William, Jr. and Elizabeth -- there is not another DANIELL name in the names of his first 10 children, is there? He did not even name one after his mother, Sarah, and that, was rare.
In my opinion, there is something missing, here.Don't think I am just singling out this one family, either. The family of Aaron DANIEL RS-SC and Betsy WHITFIELD are also in a similar situation.
This is what happens when researchers use compiled information and not researched information. Also, Aaron and his family were located in the same general area (Horry, Marlboro SC area) as these DANIELLS for some of the time frame and that my have led to some commingling.
If you want to straighten out part of this family -- find the will for William DANIELL, Sr.It is one that I do not have because my Robert C. DANIEL (ABT 1765-AFT 1830) sure fits the time frame for a child of his first wife and I would like to exclude his family from any possibility.
