origins of Dark/e family
Only just connected to the web to aid my family research and i find this site excellent.
Read with interest your information on the Dark/e family. I too have been told that family name as Norman French origins, supposed original spelling D'arques(there are places in Normandy with the name Arques. There are records of a Guillame(William) D'arques and brother on the honour rolls of the Battle of Hastings 1066.
My own family research puts my family in West London between 1750-1900,the earliest London Dark/e member of my family was Benjamin Dark. One member of my family a James Henry Dark was the owner of the Lords cricket ground in London.
Prior to this the family were from Devon mainly around Exeter and Honiton.I have been able to trace my family back to the 1560's in Devon, to a John Dark bpt 1566 in Honiton.
Further to the queries of the different spellings of the name ie Dark/e/es/er and so on i believe that they are all the same name as on of my ancestors was registered at birth as Dark but his marriage was certificate read Darke.
There seems to be quite a cluster of Dark's the South West of England, this maybe because Guillame D'arques was granted lands in Somerset by William the Conqueror for his aid during the battle of Hastings.
Hope this info as been of help,if any one as any other info on the family name or maybe related to me or know of any possible relations let me know.
BYE for now hope to talk with you soon.
