I am very interested in the D'Arcys of Tolleshunt D'Arcy. My maiden name is D'Arcy and I was born in Wanstead - on the Essex/London border. Three generations of D'Arcys have lived in Woodford, Essex. My grandmother always said we had links with these D'Arcys and about nine years ago I went on a fact finding mission to north Essex. St Osyth Priory is a large stately home now owned by Somerset de Chair, but apparently was D'Arcy property from around mid 1400s to 1728 when the last heir died. He has put together all the documents he could find into a book, although I don't know whether it was ever published. There are strong links throughout Essex, and I believe that Elizabeth I was a cousin, or at least visited the family regularly. Thomas D'Arcy also married the female heir of Hengrave Hall in Suffolk (near Bury St Edmunds). What I would like to know most of all is whether there truly is a strong link or whether my branch of the family just happened to end up here. The D'Arcys of recent generations are based in Ennis, County Clare (Ireland). My great grandfather, Anthony, came to England with the Grenadier Guards (so I am told) and ended up as a policeman in Woodford Bridge. That would have been turn of the last century (1900ish. I believe his son, Francis, was born in Fulham. I would love to share any information you have. Every time I embark on an internet search I seem to hit a dead end!!!
