While the wife of William Darwin of Louisa Co. VA is very often given as 'Wilkerson' (sometimes 'Wilkinson'), I have never been able to find a primary source which indicates this.Does anyone know where the reported name Wilkerson comes from?
I've made a trawl through Tithe lists of Louisa County for the period 1743-1785, and it may be significant that there are no families of Wilkersons/Wilkinsons at that time. This suggests (but certainly does not demonstrate) some of the following possibilities:
1.Jane Darwin's maiden name was something other than Wilkerson; the name, as reported, was in fact a conjecture by an earlier researcher which has been accepted as fact, but is misleading.
2.The name is indeed Wilkerson, but she does not come from Louisa County. We know from the later Darwin/Bland 'bible' record that William and Jane were married 26 September 1734--that is, 9 years before we have any records showing that they are in Louisa Co. (and 8 years before there are any Louisa Co. records at all!).It could be very useful in looking for William Darwin's roots if we thought that he and Jane were not in Hanover/Louisa at the time of their marriage in 1734.
Maybe we should look for hotbeds of Wilkersons at that time -- but only if we are confident that was indeed Jane's maiden name!
