My ancestor, J.F. D'Autel, immigrated from Wurtemburg to Baltimore in 1820. He listed himself as born in France. All the children had German first names, such as Johann F. D'Autel, b. 1807. My theory is that he was a Napoleonic soldier who married a German woman, who died. They came to America after she died -- no adult woman came with the group of 6 children of all ages.
Johann had 3 children, Napoleon Bonaparte D'Autel (b.1844), Josephine D'Autel, (b.1845), and Sarah Helena D'Autel. Napoleon was a Confederate soldier from GA, where they ended up; he survived the war and died in the 1870s. Sarah never married but bore a son, Joseph Franklin D'Autel, whose daughter Sarah Lucy is my grandmother and alive today at the age of 92, the last of her D'Autel line.
