Hi Gary,
I just donated a book to University of VA on all the Deadmore information I have. I am getting one ready to donate to the Abingdon Historical Society. But these will not help you with Thomas....these are really about the Dedmores/Deadmores of Abingdon & their children.
There are several more researchers looking for the links & they have been unable to find them. Was Thomas ever in the military? I haven't typed in Detamore on a search engine in about a year you might try that. I really do believe there is a link.
Here is some info on Old John Dedmore:
"At the present, this appears to be a Deadmore dead end. However, there was a Dedmore (Didmore, Dedmour) family in Rockingham Co. VA (formerly Augusta Co.) of a proceeding generation. Bearing in mind the commonly used route for westward migration to be to, & through Abingdon, Washington Co. VA., it is a distinct possibility, if not a probability, that John Dedmore & his young son, John C. travelled down to make a new start in Abingdon after the death of his first wife, whose identity is unknown.
I have been unable to find any connecting documentation to a family originating in Rockingham Co. but a great many records of the county were destroyed in 1864 (Civil War). There are notations in the court records there stating that there had been some records of a Dedmore family which were irreplaceably lost, although some others do still exist.
There was also a Clemens (Clements) family in Rockingham Co. & it could well be that was the name of the woman who was John's first wife & John C.'s mother. John C.'s daughter was named Sarah Clemens Deadmore & Clemens could be the "C" of John C. Deadmore. This can only be speculation at this time.
John C's wife was a Keller. There was a Keller family in Abingdon area, & John C's & Margaret's first son, born in 1830was named John Keller Deadmore".

* Note 1 There is a Christian Deadmour who settled in the Rockingham Co. VA area. He is listed on the 1784 Heads of Household with 4 people in his household. There is a story that Christian had a brother. Could this be the family of John Dedmore's origin?

Old John came to Abingdon, VA before the 1810 VA census. Wash. Co. VA was formed in 1777 & located in western VA. Wash. Co. was home to about 29,000 people by 1890. The area he came from was Rockingham Co. VA, Harrisonburg area, because his son, John C. was born in Harrisonburg in 1804. Old John'sfirst wife, who is unknown & apparently died soon after her son, John C. was born. Old John travelled with his young son to Abingdon, Wash. Co. VA.He was married to second wife, Sarah Clark in 1807, in Abingdon. His son, John C. would have been 3 years old in 1807. Old John's second child, Margaret/ Peggy was born after 1807.
Old John died before Feb 1815. We do not know if it was during battle in the War of 1812 or if he had returned home with an injury or illness.
Deadmore Street in Abingdon is named after Old John as one of the founders of Abingdon.
John's youngest child, Peggy Deadmore was entered into Orphan's Court in 1816. Every few years she came before the courts & her placement was re-evaluated with her financial arrangements. John had left her some money because by the time she was 18 & her money ran out the courts stopped placing her. It is unclear why she was not placed with her mother, Sarah Clark Dedmore Kahoe & new step father for this time.
John Dedmore's military records have just come to our attention. John apparently fought in the War of 1812. He enlisted at Abingdon, VA in Feb of 1814 & he was present in Staunton, VA on Apr. 30th of 1814. His occupation is listed as a shoemaker. (Book of VA Military Records mistakenly lists him as a sailmaker, even thro the original plainly states "shoemaker"] His rank is listed as "Private". His enlistment period was to last the length of the war. His physical description says he is 5 foot 9 inches tall, with blue eyes, light hair, ruddy complextion, & 31 years old. By 21 Feb 1815 his 2nd wife, Sarah had remarried. So he must have died between 30 Apr 1814 & Feb 1815. We do not know what happened to John, or where he is buried. Sarah apparently never applied for a military pension after his death. His military records were sent for from The National Archives in Wash. This has cleared up some questions about John, but it has also left us with a few more to think about.
