I am looking for relatives of William DEVENHAM.He is my Greatgrandfather and little is known about his past except the following:
William Edward Devenham birth date given as 1/20/1864
Parents were listed as George Devenham and Charlotte Ursam.
Arrived in U.S. port of Buffalo, NY, on the Grand Trunk Railroad, on or about 5/15/1890.Last residence was Toronto, Canada.
Naturalization description: “white, fair complexion, 5'4 1/2", 129 lbs, Brown hair, Blue eyes, no distinctive marks, born in London.”
From family stories: Said he stowed away from England. Said he had brothers and sisters. Said he was at a trade school and later a "Printers Devil".
Worked in Kansas City for the Armor Packing Co. Lived in a boarding house where he met Elizabeth Moore (or possibly Foster) and married (?) her.She had 3-4 children already and 4 more by William Devenham.William eventually had sole custody of his 4 children in California by 1907 and we beileve Elizabeth died in California prior to 1913.
A fire in Kansas City destroyed almost all belongings of the Devenham's prior to their moving to California in 1907.
William left Kansas City and was in Colorado & Galloys, New Mexico working in coal mines and ended up in Sacramento, California.Worked the rest of his life as a carpenter.Spent some time in Marin County, California.
Resided in California from 3/16/1907 until his death 11/26/1942.
His name is always listed as Devenham, but it could have been Debenham.
