Barton DeForest was just a lay preacher (common in those days). I checked regional Methodist archives years ago looking for his status, and he was not found listed with the "official" clergy. (I'm living in Huntingdon.)
The Taylors were very strong Methodists in old Union Township, the part that became Todd. A spot called Taylortown was the site of campmeetings. John Taylor, Jr. was Susanna's father; and John, Sr., was her grandfather. Her maternal grandfather was Philip Barnett (or Berndt). I too would like to know more about the origin of the Taylors (who, as you have seen, were also referred to as Schneider, which is the German equivalent of Taylor).
Can anyone else relate to this data? Barton's son William's listing in the 1880 Census (Cassville) supports the old family tradition that Barton came here from New York State... since for place of birth of father, it gives NY.
