John Ostrander DeGeer, b. c1800/01 s/o Peter, b, c1772 NY
New evidence has recently surfaced that indicates that earlier researchers were not aware of the maiden name of Peter DeGeer's wife Mary (?).As a result they mistook John Degeer, b. c1801 for John O. DeGeer, b. c1800/01.Both John DeGeers were born in Stamford Twp. Ontartio Canada.The specific new data uncovered in the past two years is highlighted below"
1. Peter DeGeer, b. c1772, married Maryte Ostrander on Dec. 17, 1797 in the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Caughnawaga in Fonda, NY.Maryte is a Dutch equivalent of Mary.
2. Peter DeGeer and Maryte “Mary” Ostrander had a son they named Peter.He was born August 1, 1798 in New York State and baptized in the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of Caughnawaga in Fonda, NY.The family settled in Ontario in April/May 1800.
3. An Ontario land record reports John O. DeGeer, to be a resident of Markham Twp. Ontario on June 4, 1824.At that same time the other John DeGeer and his wife Elizabeth Winterstein lived in Whitchurch Twp., Ontario(1823 – c1854).
4. At least three land records in Victoria County report John O. DeGeer’s full name as John Ostrander DeGeer.
5. Peter DeGeer and Maryte “Mary” Ostrander also had a son they named James O. DeGeer and it is believed (but not confirmed) that his middle initial also stood for “Ostrander” after his mother.
There is additional information confirming that John Ostrander DeGeer is the s/o Peter DeGeer, b. c1772 and Maryte "Mary" Ostrander.
