Thank you so much for all of your information. My husband's connection is through his paternal grandmother, Anna Evelyn Hobson Oliver.
I have found something interesting regarding Sarah Thomas, daughter of Col Thomas, who served in the Revolutionary War."
This is from the file of the Hobson research material:
Hobson family Bible
Original Owner - William & Cicely Thomas Hobson
Present owner - Mr. E. W. Hobson
Adress: - 390 West Outer Drive, Old Ridge, Tennessee
Name of publisher and date published - page torn out
Submitted by - Mrs. John H. Bryan
Address - West Point, Clay County, Mississippi
Note according to Mrs. Elizabeth Wood Thomas (who you mentioned)of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the parents of the Thomases, including Cicely Thomas Hobson, listed in this Bible, were - James and Susannah Mabry (?) Thomas of Fairfield Co., S. C.From Mrs. H. BryanMississippi Genealogical Society.
In much of the material Cicely is spelled Sisely, could it be a nickname for the Sarah who marriedAllen de Graffenried?Or did James and Sussanna Mabry Thomas have a daughter named Cicely and then another one Sarah?
I have spent more time reading "The History of the Hobson Family" and have found this out, and how it connects in to Cicely and the relation to the de Graftenreid family.
This next part comes from "The History of the Hobson Family from Earliest settlements in the USA, from the earliest settlement and during and after the revolutionary war between the setlers and the mother country."
The oldest member (Nickolas) of the family I have any account of was born in Wales. When young he moved to England and married a lady there.Soon after their marriage they... moved to the new country and setled near where Culpeper Courthouse Virginia, is now, and reared a large family of children (about this time the war broke out between the mother country and setlers). The name of his children were Nickolas, Thomas, Archible, Mathew, Frank, Willam, Agnes and Missouria.(Some of these names correspond to the names that you listed for his children but more).Nickolas became the captain of his company and fought until he was wounded and went blind. He was granted 4000 acres in Green County, Alabama. He was to old to go and claim it so his children went. There were no railroads or public conveyances so they traveled in what was the old fashion "Carry All."(I left some out)...I neglected to mention above that Nickolas Hobson's wife was a Degraftenreid. She (is this Sarah, daughter of Tscharner de Graffenried?)had a brother DeGraftenreid, who lived in Chester, County, SC.These Hobson children, of Nikolas Hobson were airing to stop with their Uncle DeGraftenreid (I wonder what his name is?), a few days rest while on their way to their new home, in Alabama.William Hobson the yougest was a boy about 15 or 16 years of age and while he was there he made a trade with his Uncle to stay and work for him instead of going on to Alabama, with the older ones. While working for his Uncle DeGraftenreid, he fell in love with a girl who also was living there and married her later. This girl Sisely Thomas, Daughter of Col. John Thomas was my Father's Mother and our Grandmother. She also was the Sister of Davy Thomas, your mother's grandfather.
This letter was written by William S. Hobson, father of Janie Thomas Hobson, Daggett.
In My husband's Oliver family tree I find that William Hobson was born, May 6, 1773 in Mehrens River Area, Lunenburg Co, Virginia died May 31, 1839 in Unionville, S.C. He waa the son of Nicholas Hobson and Sarah Degraffenreid. He married Cicily Thomas Sept. 15, 1796 in Unionville, SC.Cicily Thomas, born March 13, 1782 in Fairfield Co., SC died Nov. 23, 1877 in Vanvleet, Chicasaw County. She was the daughter of John Thomas, Jr. and Susannah Mably(?).This information is held in DAR papers in Washinton, DC.
I don't want to type the whole will of William Hobson recorded in 1839 in South Carolina, that lists property from their plantation and who it goes to.He gives most to his wife Cicily Hobson. He mentions some children, Francis Hobson, Cicily Hobson and Regina Hobson that he divides more property between. It sounds like he had others because he says, "I wish it to be distinctly understood that no other one of my children are to receive anything at my death, as they have been heretofore advanced, what I consider equal to the amount which I now leave to my three youngest children, but they all come in for an equal share of what my wife may leave at her death...
Notes:I found the John Thomas (Col.) and Susannah Mably only had two children: Cicily Thomas born March 13, 1782 and Davy Thomas (no Sarah).
I also found that Nicholas Hobson and Sarah Degraffenreid had 11 children!William Hobson (1773) married Cicily Thomas in Unionville, SC on Sept. 15, 1796., Jenny Hobson(1775), John Hobson (1777), Polly B. Hobson, Christopher Hobson (1779), Francis Hobson (1780), Agnes G. Hobson (1781), Matthew Hobson (1782), Allen Hobson (1786), Baker Hobson (1813), and Patsey Hobson (1788). All born in Lunenburg County, VA.
I also found the connection that the child of Tscharner Degreffenreid and Mary Baker, Sarah (born August 2, 1750 in Lunenburg Co, VA) and she married Nicholas Hobson sometime between 1770 - 1772 in Lunenburg CO, VA.
This is still confusing to me, my husband has this original will put up with the Hobson family tree somewhere.
Where my husband's grandmother, Anna Evelyn Hobson (Oliver)born Sept. 15, 1908 comes in, Her father and mother were Thomas Walker Hobson (born 6/12/1873 in Union County, SC) and her mother was Delia Owen. Thomas Walker Hobson's parents were Fancis Hobson (he was the son of William Hobson (his mother was Sarah DeGraffenreid) and Cicly Thomas)and Mary Sue Walker (daughter of William W. Walker and Susan Park).
If I could find it I could clear some of this up and you probably would see the connection. Some of the same names sure confuses me!So doe Sarah DeGraffenreid link my husband to the landgrave of New Bern? Thanks for the help.
