Brenda, The "Guide to Papers of The Delaplaine Family-1762-1879" (New York Historical Society)on google gives lots info. Also "History and Genealogy of the COCK-COCKS-COX Family" (this is a book written in 1914 and can now be downloaded...contains photos and info on James Delaplaine. My late husbands Aunt Married GGGGrand son of James & Hannah Cock Deplaine. They lived Wheeling West Virginia. A scrap book handed down contains much history/clippings & interesting items. Also photos of St. James Church, Stanton, Delaware & of the Cemetery..under which is written "Some of the Delaplaine are buried here"
One article mentions a "J.D.DELAPLAIN ESQ., the efficient agent of the N.& W. Railroad at the Main Streed Depot, by the courtesy of the company, has been given a vacation & transportation for himself and family down into Old Virginia--accompanied by Mrs. Delaplane. Mrs E.F.Delaplane and child will leave for Buckland, Prince William County Va. They will visit Mr. D's birthplace and boyhood home at Kinsley's Mill, near the famous Bull Run Battlefield, Where his 3 sisters reside, they and he being the only survivors of fourteen brothers and sisters. On the 4th of July the Squire expects his sons, Edward F. and James to join him with others of the name in the region roundabout, will have a family reunion at the old homestead where cluster so many fond recollections, which will be a notable event in the history of this old and esteemed Virginia family. Our ernest wishes will go with Mr. Delaplane for the realixations of his expectaion of the trip and visit." One Clipping Has drawing of the "Old De La Plaine House" In Germantown. built by James De La Plaine(son of Nicholas) House was torn down in 1885 by Mutual Insurance Co and a Bronze Memorial Tablet was placed on the "handsome" structure they built--which reads: On this site stood THE DE LA PLAINE HOUSE From its balcony overlooking Market Square WHITEFIELD once preached. In its cellar during the Battle of Germantown many women and children found refuge. The Site and Relic Society of Germantown. 1995"
NICHOLAS DE LA PLAINE(1633-1712) m SUSANNA CRESSON b 1642. De la Plaine was Huguenot who fled France, was known to be in New York as early as 1657. Is said they had 12 children I can find record of only six. JAMES de la PLAINE (as he wrote it) settled in Germantown Pa (now part Philidelphia) in 1698 he was Clerk of the Court of Germantown and in 1703-04 gave to the city what is known as Market Square.
