For anyone researching George DeLong who married Elizabeth Jane Ward, there is a misconception floating out there about property he acquired in Ohio in 1811.Many people report that property as being in the NW 1/4 portion of Section Roman Numeral II (meaning 2), Township 01, Range 01.Even the noted researcher John Baldwin states it as so.However the publication "A Listing of Entrymen on Lands in Guernsey Co., Ohio" clealy states that George acquired land on Sept. 2, 1811 described as being Range 01, Twp. 01, Section 11 (shown as the normal number for eleven), NW 1/4 portion of the section, 160 acres.
Also, historical writings have described his property to have been southwest of Kennonsburg (which is a VERY small town).I have a map that shows Kennonsburg as well as the Sections of Wayne Twp., Noble County.(When Noble Co. was formed it included a portion of what used to be in Guernsey Co.)It seems impossible that the northwest quarter of Section 02 could be situated southwest of Kennonsburg. However, the northwest quarter of Section 11 clearly is southwest of Kennonsburg.
Incidentally, yesterday my husband and I drove to this area, and I suspect some small portion of what used to be George's property now lies under Seneca Lake, which is a man-made lake.
