The Joseph Delon who is my 3rd GGF and was born in 1812 in Sacketts Harbor, NY was married to Eliza Jourdain, born in 1812 on the Oneida Reservation in New York State.
Joseph Delon's mother was Dinah Jourdain, probably a relative of Eliza's, and his father was an individual whose first name I do not know but who's last name was Kennedy-Delon.It is unclear of how the inter-mixing of the surnames Kennedy and Delon came about.Dinah may have married a man with the surname of Kennedy and later a man with the surname of Delon, or it is possible she married a man with the double surname of Kennedy-Delon.On some documents the name Kennedy is used, on others Kennedy-Delon, and on others, Delon only.Delon is a French name and is probably from a fur trader who had come to the Western New York State region, maybe from Canada.Kennedy is an Irish name. This person must have also settled among the Oneida as there were many tribe members who used this surname. Her children usually carry the name Delon.
Although the Onedia nation began fragmenting in the 1820's into Canada, Wisconsin, and remaining in New York, it is unknown when Dinah and her husband came to Wisconsin. In a document supporting a fund claim in 1903, an affidavit by John P. Hendricks, the Chairman of the Stockbridge Tribe of Indians, who were closely related to the Oneida, mentions that he had seen Henry Jordan, brother to Dinah, in Madison County, State of New York, in 1846.Dinah died in 1869 on the Oneida Reservation near Green Bay.
One of Dinah’s sons was Joseph Delon (3rd GGF).He was born in 1812 in Sackette Harbor, New York.He married Eliza Jourdain, also born in 1812 on the Oneida Reservation in New York State.Eliza is undoubtedly from the Nicholas Jourdain line but her parentage has not yet been determined.
In the 1850 Wisconsin census, Joseph Delon's race is listed as 'M' for Mulatto (half white, half Indian). One contradictory item is Joseph's place of birth. The 1850 Wisconsin census lists his place of birth as Canada. However, on Joseph's death certificate, his place of birth is listed as Sackette Harbor, New York.On the 1850 Wisconsin Census, Joseph's last name is listed as "Delong", but his wife Eliza's is listed as "Delon".His occupation is listed as "Cloth Dresser and Dryer".
In the 1901 Kansas Land claim document, Lucy Jourdain lists her husband as John Delon, alias John Kennedy, and his parents as John and Eliza.Again, the interchangeability of the names Delon and Kennedy.
Note to Roger Miller:I have more interesting info for the Jordan line but it is off subject in this forum. If you care to contact me off line regarding this or who I have as Joseph Delon descendents, you may e-mail me.My e-mail address is not encrypted so you should be able to fine it here.
