Demont in NY, OH, MI, IN; Richard, George, Collins, Silverthorne,Pettis
I am posting everything I have in hopes that someone else is researching the same DeMont family. Most of my information originally came from Edna DeMont Johnston of Indiana and Earnest Clyde Kepner of IA,OK, TX.
Olive Ellen DeMont born 28 April 1875 in IL, probably Utica, LaSalle Co. (see 1880 census for IL), married twice: 1st: on 7 Jan 1892 at Taylor,Iowa, she married Willard (Wilard) Grant Kepner (aka: Grant Kepner, who was born 21 May, 1865 at Adair Co., IA); and 2nd: married to Eugene Ogle Cart sometime after 1905 and before 1917 (aka: Ogle Eugene Cart, born about 1876, KY). Olive DeMont Kepner Cart died 24 May, 1942 at St John's Hospital, Tulsa, OK. Buried at Sand Springs, OK. W. Grant Kepner died in Monona Co., IA. Eugene O. Cart died in 1946 in CA.
Olive had at least two sisters: Roxy and Mabel. One of these sisters was married to Ben F. Lair (age 78 in 1930 Sand Springs, OK census, born in IN). Lair and his wifehad at least 2 sons: Pete (born in KS about 1906) and Joe (born KS, about 1916). Olive may have had 2 brothers: Joseph (born 1879, IL) and Edward. I do not know what happened to Olive's siblings. Roxana (Roxie, born 1877, IL) and Mabel (born after 1880, probable in IA) were living in 1911 and were listed in their father's obituary.
Olive DeMont Kepner Cart was the oldest child of Isadora (aka: Dora, Isadorah) Owen (aka: Claughbaugh, or Clabaugh) and Richard Smith DeMont. "Dora" and Richard were married 20 Jan 1873 in LaSalle Co., IL. Shortly after 1880, they moved to Iowa.
Isadora Owen (or Claughbaugh?) DeMont: born 1858 (1857?)and died 9 April 1894 in Adair Co, IA. She is buried in the Winn Cemetery, between Bridgewater and Washington. I have visited her grave. It has a well preserved, beautiful, very legible, black tombstone which gives her age as 36. The cemetery (about 12 graves) is in terrible condition and in the middle of a cow pasture; you have to hike to get to it. Isadorah was supposedly the daughter of Jacob (born 1802) and Isabella (Williams) Owen. Last name is also misspelled as "Owens." Isabella would have been in her early 50's when Isadora was born. They did raise Dora as their daughter, but in the 1860 census for Clermont or Adams Co., OH, Isadora's last name is given as Claughbaugh. From 1860 on, it appears as Owen or DeMont.
Richard Smith DeMont was born 28 Feb. 1851 in Indiana (based on age given in 1870 Marshall Co., IN census and 1880 LaSalle Co., IL census). He was probably born in Marshall, Co. Richard S. DeMont died 10 Sept. 1911 in Independence, KS and is buried in the huge city cemetery. He was my gg grandfather and made his living as a teamster. He was the son of George Almar DeMont(aka: Almarr) and Roxana Collins. I have lost the dates that Edna Demont Johnston gave me about 40 years ago. Hopefully, one of her descendants will see this posting and fill in the missing dates/facts.
George A. (Almar) DeMont was born 15 Feb. 1814 in Junius, Seneca, NY. There are other birth dates given for George, but this is the birthdate on his tombstone in the Zion Cemetery, Union Township, south section, row 5, of Marshall Co., IN. He died 28 Feb. 1888. George Almarr DeMont was the son of Richard DeMont (born 29 Nov 1777 at Aurelius, NY; died 30 March 1840 at Bertrand, Berrien Co., MI) and Mary Sasson (born 19 May 1780, Whitehall, NY; died 13 Sept 1841 at Bertrand, Berrien Co., MI)
George was married 3 times. 1st: to Jane Silverthorne, in the 1830's. I can't remember if they married in NY, OH, or MI but I do know they had 2 daughters. I think one was named Mary Jane; can't remember the other name. The 2 daughters are not living with George in the 1850 census for Marshall Co., IN.
George's second marriage was to Roxana Collins, born about 1821 in Conn., daughter of David Collins (born about 1786 in Conn.) and Sabrina ?? (born about 1793, Conn, see 1850 Marshall Co., IN census). All of the "Roxie's" in later generations are named after this Roxana Collins DeMont. Roxana died 24 August 1855 at Plymouth, IN at the age of 34 (obituary on page 3 of the Plymouth Weekly Banner, 30 Aug 1855). Roxana and George were married about 1844, possibly in Berrien Co., MI, but more likely in Marshall Co., IN, because Roxana's father was an early settler of this county. David Collins died 17 Nov. 1853 at the age of 67 at Plymouth, IN (same newspaper, Nov. 24th, 1853 issue). David and Sabrina Collins had at least 3 children: Roxana (b. 1821), Edward (born 1823 in NY, died 17 Oct 1891 at Blissfield, MI), and Eunice ("Euncie", born 6 Sept 1827 in NY and died 7 Aug 1908 in Erie, PA). Edward Collins' obituary says he is survived by 9 children andhis widow. Eunice Colins was married twice: 1st to John R. Welch on 20 Oct. 1853. John Welch: born 4 Oct 1826 and died 23 May 1858; 2nd to John H. Haynes on 12 Jan 1871. She is buried as "Eunice Welch."
George's third marriage was to Kizire Owens Pettis (Owens was her maiden name; first name is also spelled Kisire). Kizire was born 12 July 1824 in IN (according to 1880 census and her tombstone in the Zion cemetery) and died 16 June 1904. In her obituary in the Rochester Sentinel, Fulton Co., IN: She was born at Seneca, OH, and married Jerimiah Pettis in 1839. They had 4 children. All died before 1904. Married 25 Dec. 1855 to George A. DeMont and they had 6 children: Roxey DeMont Heeter of Delong; Alice DeMont of Fulton Co., IN; Ella DeMont Elinger of Stone Bridge, Canada; Philip DeMont of Michigan City; John DeMont of Kalamazoo, MI; and Charles DeMont of Rochester. One sister survived Kizire: Mrs. Louisa Osborn of Culver. Mrs. DeMont arrived in Fulton Co. in 1880, according to this obituary.
In the Marshall Co., IN 1850 census the following DeMont's appear: George A. age 37 farmer born NY; Roxana DeMont age 29 born Conn; Ann E. DeMont age 5 born Michigan; William F (?) age 4 born Mich; and George A. DeMont Jr. age 3 born IN (I think that's what it says). Immediately following George and Roxana are her parents.
Does anyone have the 1860 Center Township, Marshall Co. IN census, page 631? George DuMont appears on this page. I'm certain this is the same George as in 1850 but I do not have access to that census record.
In the Union Twp., Marshall Co., IN 1870 census the following DeMont's appear: George age 56 white farmer born NY; Kizire (it actually says some other spelling, but I can't make it out) age 42 born IN; William age 23 farm laborer born IN (in 1850, he was born in MI); George age 21 born IN; Richard age 19 born IN (my gg grandfather); Joseph age 17 born IN (this is Edna DeMont Johnston's father); Charles DeMont age 13 born IN; Philip age 4 born IN; John age 2 born IN; Roxana age 11 born IN (actual birthdate was 29 Jan 1859 in Marshall Co); Alice age 9 born IN; and Ellen age 7 born IN. The first 4 young men, William, George, Richard and Joseph were from the first marriage to Roxana Collins; the last 6 are from the second marriage to Kizire Owens Pettis.
Joseph E. DeMont married Margaret J. Shaw on 12 Feb. 1880 in Starke Co., IN. Charles DeMonte (misspelling) married Maria E Homer 20 May 1880 in Starke Co. A Charles DeMont married Frances R. Clayborn 21 March 1903 in Fulton Co. Phillip DeMont married Mary Beall, 25 Sept 1887 in Fulton Co. Mary Beall the daughter of Thos. Beall. Phillip and Mary moved to Aurora, IL. Roxey DeMont married Wm. W. Heeter 3 May 1894 in Fulton Co. George A. DeMont married Susan C. Gray 28 Sept 1876 in Marshall Co. Susie Gray DeMont died 15 May 1889. They had 2 children: Nellie (born 1878) and Earl.
In 1881, Geo. A. Demont sold his "Brick" livery stable to G.W. Stockton.
On 3 Oct. 1899 "Mrs. Fetters" of Culver died, a stepsister of William DeMont (I think this might be one of the 2 daughters from George A. DeMont's first marriage to Jane Silverthorne). Kisire DeMont attended the funeral of her stepdaughter, became ill, and died 7 Oct. 1899. George and Roxana did not have any daughters/stepdaughters and all of George and Kizire's children were still living, according to Kizire DeMont obituary, so Mrs. Fetters of Culver is a mystery. A daughter of Jane Silverthorne DeMont?
Roxy Jane, dau. of Charles DeMont, died 27 Apr 1903 of consumption at the age of 17 y. and 1 month. Buried at Mentone cemetery.
From the 1920 Plymouth Weekly Republican newspaper, the following obituary: Joseph Edward DeMont born 25 April 1853, near Plymouth, IN and died 14 April 1920 at Monterey, IN. He and Margaret Jane Shaw (1861-1919) had 11 children, 3 deceased by 1920. The following 8 children are listed: Mrs. C.A. Hall of Chicago; William M. DeMont of Knox; Mrs. Ray Terry and Mrs. Ralph Jordan of South Bend; Maude, Earl, Edna, and Alice at home. Two grandchildren: Dorothy and Joseph DeMont. Buried in the Zion cemetery, Marshall Co.
George Almarr DeMont was the son of Richard and Mary Sasson DeMont. He had one sister, Abigail, and several brothers. The only brothers Edna wrote about were Laurence, Richard A. (who appears in MI and IN records), Joseph, and Edward. There are some references to these people online.
I would like to correspond with descendants of Richard and Mary DeMont. Surely there's more information out there? Please correct my errors! Jacqueline
