I have just begun work on my family tree.It does not go back very far yet and is full of inconsistencies that I have not been able to sort out enough of to get back any further as yet.Maybe someone can help.
There is a story that the original family name in Ireland was Dempsey, changed to Dempster when my grandfather immigrated to Canada in the early 1900s (between 1908 and 1913).I can't confirm this yet.
My grandfather, Robert James Dempster (Dempsey?)was born in Ireland in circa 1885 to James Dempsey/Dempster and Lizzie Canning.I know he had at least 1 brother who immigrated to N. Zealand around the time that Robert came to Canada.
Another story that I cannot confirm, but seems true, is that he was first married in Belfast - likely 1907 and had a young child, but mother and child died in a house fire. Can't find anything about the fire.
I have been able to locate a Robert James DEMPSEY who married a Sarah Campbell (Robert Campbell father) January 28, 1907 in Belfast. Wm John Lowe and Elizabeth Campbell stood up for them.Robertlived at 19 Fraser St. and was a "labourer".Sarah lived at 92 Church St. East and was a "machinist".They were married at Bloomfield Congregational Church by Rev John McKee. That trail, so far, ends there, although I have a request into the church for a record of Sarah's death or the birth of any children.
To add another twist, I have also located, by a 1911 census, a Robert James DEMPSTER (b. 1885) who, in 1907, married a Sarah Campbell (b. 1887) in Belfast! They resided at 71 Church St. East, Co. Antrim with her mother, Eliza. Many similarities to the above info, but different last name!!!
Robert immigrated to Canada, (apparently after the death of Sarah if that info is correct) and married Winifred Elizabeth Mary Patterson, my grandmother. They married in Toronto on January 17, 1913.
If anyone could help me begin to delete some of these questions marks I would be extremely grateful.I would likely mean that I could then begin to trace further back!!!Thanks for any help offered.Chris
