James Denby (c1739,1795)died in Franklin Co., NC. He was the father of a number of children including my ancestor Keziah Denby, who married Enos Bird.
There are 80 people on Ancestry.com alone who list the parents of James Denby (c1739,1795) as Jonathon Denby and wife Mary Patsey Satchwell. With that many in agreement, I expected to surely find they had it right. Evidently not so.
It is true that there was a John Denby who married a Mary Patsey Satchwell, but, according to the record below, that marriage (in Norfolk Co., VA) was on July 11th, 1796!! This was about 57 years too late to be the mother of James Denby who was born about 1739 (and in fact James was dead before that supposed marriage of his parents occurred). Seems quite a huge mistake for more than 80 people to have accepted.
Unless the source below is just wrong,it would seem that the spread of genealogical misinformation is getting out of control. There have always been mistakes that get adopted by others without finding a source, but the numbers are now becoming huge. I think the new programs that pop up possible matches and make it easy to merge a whole family of data without giving any sources, have greatly magnified the problem.
I'm still looking for the parents of James Denby. Please let me know if you have any hints who they might be.
