William Depew b: 6 June 1768, PAd: 6 July 1857, Polk Co., IA, bur: Stuart Cem., Four Mile TWP, Polk Co., IA.Info taken from headstone.Married 3 Oct. 1792 in Washington Co., KY to Joannah Killand.
NOTE:The marriage record I obtained in Salt Lake City, UT, states that William Depew married Joannah Keeland.The Washington Co. KY marriage records as transcribed by Margaret Clark Kington states he married Joannah Kenneson.The Marriage Index #2 by Broderbund, states he married Joannah Killand.Take your pick--I chose Joannah Killand.All three list the same marriage date.
William served in the war of 1812.He served in Capt. Robert Burnet's Co. of Infantry of the 7th Regiment (Barbee's) of the Kentucky Militia.
"State of Kentucky, Sct I, William Depew of Washington County, have this day entered the service of the United States as Pack Horse driver for three months, unless sooner discharged in which capacity I bind myself to act soberly and honestly, and with due obedience to ----- appointed master of the Brigade to which I am attached, to receive Twenty dollars a month, and a ration and a half a day, payable monthly----on producing a certificate of service rendered. Witness my hand and seal this Twenty First day of Dec' one thousand eight hundred and twelve. "V" (the mark of Wm Depew) Teste N. H. Prasell"
I only have one child listed for the descendant of William and Joannah, that being John Depew who married Mary "Polly" Grigsby.
In the 1856 STATE Census of Camp Township, Polk Co., IA, it states:
John Depew 62 M b: KYFarmer Polly Depew 61 F b: VA William Depew 89 M b: PA
Also listed in that same census is: Grigsby Depew 20 b: INFarmer Louisa Depew 18 b: IN Nathaniel Depew 0 b: Iowa (obviously an infant)
