Who Are The Derflinger’s ?
My Family Name & Origin
Written by Rebecca Derflinger Messner
The basic origin of the name Derflinger dates as far back as the 1300’s in Europe and is derived from the German word Dorf, which means small village. A person or persons coming from Dorf/Dorfling would be a Dorflinger. There are several towns in existence today which are named Dorf/Dorfling and they can be found in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. In my research of both German & American records of the Derflinger’s, I have found that our name was changed from its original German spelling. The original spelling was Dorflinger with 2 dots over the o. Dorflinger and is also spelled Doerflinger. The German o is an “umlaut” that is a short cut for the letters oe.There is no exact equivalent in English for the sound, but to an English/American ear it might sound something like an e or u.Due to phonetic interpretations the name Dorflinger/ Doerflinger has been altered to other various spellings in America. Emigration records of Doerflinger’s have lead me to visit two areas in Germany where I have met present day German Doerflinger’s and have seen the name Doerflinger on graves, memorials, monuments and soldiers cemeteries. In 1998 & 1999, I visited 2 areas of Germany, which have and had Dorflinger’s. The first place I visited was the Black Forest, it is a wonderful place and I was thrilled to have found and visited Dorflinger's there. The other town which I went to on several occasions is the small town of Blankenloch, a friendly town where I met German Dorflinger’s and found a great deal of information connecting the U.S. Derflinger’s to this town. Although the number of Doerflingers has declined in Blankenloch the name Doerflinger is still a predominant name in the town. The Lutheran Church in Blankenloch has very old records which contain information on Doerflinger’s that lived there and the Doerflingers who left from there to live in America, mostly in Pennsylvania.Information from books and German people show that the Doerflinger’s were Palatine (of the Lutheran faith) and came up from Switzerland and France in the 1600-1700, some settled in the state Baden - Wuerttemberg, Germany others went on to Prussia (now Austria), United States and other various places. Of special note, I have come across in research a famous Doerflinger who lived in Austria and was a war hero and a baron (Baron Von Doerflinger) also spelled in records Derrflinger. Phone directories in Europe show Dorflinger’s (with umlaut) in Switzerland, France, Germany, and Austria. I have found both spellings Dorflinger’s and Derflinger’s in Austria. In the U.S., I have found various spellings derived from the same origin they include Doerflinger, Derflinger, Durflinger, Darflinger, Dorflinger (without umlaut) and also the names Taflinger & Turflinger.
I have found that the name Derflinger or Doerflinger is a very old and unusual name but in that sense it stands out. Records show so far that the American Derflinger's (Dorflinger's) descended from 4 individuals/families who immigrated to the U.S. primarily in the 1700's. Most of them lived in Buck's County, PA and later moved to Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and so on.
Listed below is some information on Derflinger’s from my family of Lloyd Derflinger and others relatives of Warren County, Virginia. My father is Lloyd Derflinger who lives on Guard Hill Road in Front Royal, Virginia. My grandfather was Walter Derflinger and he lived and is buried in Front Royal, Virginia.
