I'm sure there were incentives, since the French owned the Louisiana Territory, they issued land grants to many adventurous souls to get established in that new frontier. They were the first Europeans to make their homes in Illinois, and they established forts, missions and villages all along the Mississippi and other rivers in that area. A lot of French Canadians came to the new frontier as well. One reason they traveled to New Orleans, was to trade their agricultural products and furs for commodities they could not get on the frontier. By 1750, New Orleans was a thriving city and the principle trading post between the Illinois county, Europe, and the Caribbean sugar islands. It would take about 2 to 3 weeks when the river was high to travel downstream from Kaskaskia, IL to New Orleans, however the return trip upstream would take 3 to 4 months! What hardy souls our ancestors were!!!I really find the history of the area fascinating.Hope I haven't bored anyone with all this!
