In re Marie Donneville-Belleau who married Stanislas Roy (s/o Etienne Benoit Roy and Marie Charlotte Moreau):
Marie Donneville-Belleau is described in her marriage record as the adopted daughter of Marie Reine Gauvreau, the widow of Benoit Roy.
This Benoit Roy is not Stanislaus' father, it is his brother.Marie was the adopted daughter of her husband's brother’s wife, Marie Reine Gauvreau. That would make her the step-niece by adoption of Stanislas, not his adopted sister.
Marie Reine Gauvreau:
b.16MAR1784 Québec City
m1 : Joseph Beleau, 9FEB1802, Notre Dame de Québec
m2 : Benoit Roy (s/o Etienne Benoit Roy & Marie Charlotte Moreau), 14AUG1809, Notre Dame de Québec
m3 : Amable Morin, 6OCT1817, Ste-Anne-de-La Pocatière
d. 15FEB1855, St-Roche-des-Aulnaies
Marie Reine Gauvreau’s first husband was Joseph Belleau whom she married at Québec City on 9 FEB1802.She married Benoit Roy, son of Benoit Roy and Marie-Charlotte Moreau in 1809, and married a third time in 1817 to Amable Morin.
Marie Reine Gauvreau did not die in 1815, because she clearly is identified as the widow of Benoit Roy in the record of her marriage with Amable Morin in 1817, and as the widow of Amable Morin at her death in 1855.At her marriage to Joseph Belleau in 1809, Marie Reine Gauvreau would have been 18, certainly young, but not too young to adopt a child.
Since the adopted daughter is named Marie Donneville dit Belleau, it would make sense to think that Marie Donneville-Beleau was the adopted daughter of the first husband, but of this there is no proof, at least I can find no baptismal record for a child of this man.She might be an illegitimate child of Joseph Belleau (15OCT1774-11MAY1806), who would have been in his early 20s when Marie Donneville-Belleau was born.
Stanislas Roy’s burial recordand the baptismal records of several of his children -- his daughter Henriette, for example -- give no surname for his wife, only a first name and then a line. This could indicate that her family name is unknown to the priest (unlikely) or that she is indeed an illegitimate child who was adopted by Mme Benoit Roy, as indicated in the marriage record of Stanislas and Marie Donneville. It might also mean that she was considered illegitimate because she was of Indian birth and her parents were not married in the Catholic church.
In several online genealogies Marie Donneville Belleau is called “orpheline Amerindienne” – American Indian orphan.I have never seen any concrete proof that this is true. However, I do have a chain of concurring stories that indicate it might be true.I am a 5th-generation descendant through a son of Marie Donneville and Stanislas Roy, and my family tradition is that one of our (several times great-) grandmothers was Indian. In my research over the years I have been in contact with two other descendants whose families have the same tradition. One person is a 5th-generation descendant through another son of Marie and Stanislas; the other person is a 5th generation descendant through one of their daughters;two of us live in Québec, one in the U.S.; none of us knew of each other, had never met before corresponding about Marie Donneville, and our families do not know each other.Yet the same tradition exists about the Marie in all three families. This leads me to suspect that the family stories are true, though I cannot at this time prove it.
