"Margarite Deschaies" ... Marguerite Deschenes Thibault??
Back in 1998, my cuosin Aurora emailed me this information from a family bible:
"[... I found a note book with notes he had taken from Granma Emilia. It was a translation from French to English.
Sister Amalia Marie Thibault born 1857, Sister Charlotte Paulett Thibault Born 1844, mother Margarite Deschaies.
My mother Teoma Vaillant was from Fort Edmonton. My mother a Mestis Algonquian & French.Grandmother Tomasita Or Teoma from the picture looks native American. One other note states that Gradmother Emilia spoke fluent French.
She states that her Grandfatherwas very kind and sang a French songs. She called him Pappie Josette.Maybe the name was Joseph.FortEdmonton is in Canada.Mymother Teomaworked at the Fort store and also spoke Spanish, my father spoke French and English.Mother was very sad missed her family.Mother had a brother in new mexico.
My Father wrote & took notes as his Grandmother spoke.Does any of this ring a bell. The date my Fatherwrote this in the journal was 12/27/1934.I haven't made any connections on the Canadian web ...]"
Emilia's father was Joseph Thibault, son of Margarite Deschaies.I have found some info on one Marguerite Deschenes (and name variants), but no connection to having children with a Thibault. I am looking for information that may have a connection to Deschenes and Thibault and also any information on Teoma Vaillant's family lines.
I would like to confirm any of Canada's Native People connections as well.
Joseph Thibault and Teoma Vaillant (Tomasita Valencia as we first was told) ended up in NM territory and their daughter Emilia married Jose Antonio Pena and lived her life out in St. Johns, AZ.There were spelling variations of Thibault in New Mexico: Activo, Tivo, Tibo and Thibauld. Some descendents of Emilia's siblings went by Tibo.
If anyone would know this .... Where would I need to go to find out if there are records on the people who worked or lived at Fort Edmonton in the early to mid 1800s?
