By the way: when the term Fitz was added to a Norman name: it meant "not the legitimate son of"....meaning illegitimate son of .......so Fitz Picot is the illegitimate son of Picot....

This was not odd at all in Normandy:
the Norman style of marriage was one legal wife:
usually for property or political reasons
and any number of concubines:.....men often having a dozen or so.......and obviously numerous offspring......
These sons were always acknowledged.....and taken into the "clan" as full family members: although inheritance issues often caused fights later on: legitimate vs illegitimate.
