The Dettmer's, from whom I am descended, were originally Roman Catholic. My father understands that they lived in what would now be Northern Germany. This was Protestant and so they moved to the Catholic South of the country where it was more comfortable for them!
Here they made pianos.George Dettmer came to England, we believe to study piano making under Clementi who was a famous concert pianist turned piano maker.George set up George Dettmer and Son Piano Makers in Marylebone, London.
His marriage produced 14 sons and 3 sisters to our understanding. Here are some of them (these names were favoured and crop up over and over again) - William (Wilhelm), Henry (Heinrich), Walter, Joseph (Josef), Frederick (Freidrich), Charles (Karl), John (Johan) who was known as John the German, and Louis, who became Louis von Dettmer due to his bravery at the Battle of Waterloo under Feld Marchal Blücherwho was German but not Germany as we know it, we think Brunswick.
John the German invented a mechanic that allowed the black notes on pianos (Gosh).Prior to this there had only been white.
There was a Charles Ephraim Dettmer who died in 1915 or 16 killed by Zeppelin at Victoria. My father, Charles Henry Dettmer was born 1st April 1921.His father was also Charles Henryborn 1887 who died in 1952, a year before I was born – 17th October, 1953.
Our ancestors lived mainly in the St Pancras area of London.A genuine Dettmer piano (we have one in the family) has the intials GWD scratched inside. We know there is a Dettmer piano in a Kent museum.
My father has promised to give me more info, which I will post when I get it.He was a journalist, as indeed am I and my brother is too.My mother is Barbara Elaine nee Kempner.
