I purchased the subject undated studio portrait of an elderly couple taken by J. Hess, Reading, PA.It is identified on the back of the mount:
"Grandfather & Grandmother Deitweiler
Dr. Washington C. Detweiler's parents"
I found a Family Group Record on familysearch.org.I also found the family listed in the 1850 Census data for Rockland Township, Berks Co., PA; and the 1870 and 1880 Census data for Reading, Berks Co., PA.
Charles Detweiler, born 20 Dec 1805 in Maindencreek Township, Berks Co., PA, died 1 Feb 1889, was the son of Jacob Detweiler and Susanna/Susannah Rothermel. In 1828, he married Catharine Christman, born about 1807 in Berks Co., PA.Charles was employed as a carpenter. The couple had the following nine children (all born in Berks Co., PA):
Isaac C. Detweiler, b. about 1829, d. 29 Sep 1887 William Detweiler, b. about 1831 Peter Detweiler, b. 23 Jul 1833 Isabella Detweiler, b. about 1835 Rosalinda Detweiler, b. about 1837 Charles Detweiler, b. 20 Aug 1840 Benjamin Detweiler, b. about 1842 Washington C. Detweiler, b. about 1844, d. 6 Jul 1884 Aaron H. Detweiler, b. about 1846, d. 6 Jul 1844
Accompanying this photo and presumably from the same collection is a unidentified circa 1870s studio portrait of a young bearded gentleman taken by Marks, Houston, TX.The seller speculated that this is a photo of Washington C. Detweiler, although I have found no evidence that he ever lived in or visited the State of Texas.
An obituary for Isaac C. Detweiler, a homeopathic physician, was published 30 Au 1900 in the New York Times. It mentions that, "Some years ago two of his brothers, also physicians, were drowned while bathing in the Schuylkill River."I assume these two brothers are Washington C. and Aaron H. Detweiler.
