I am trying to correlate the various pieces of data concerning the Diefendorf/Devendorf family, including Col. Bell's book, M aryly Penrose, Henry Z. Jones, Jr., Wm. H. Barker, as well as references from various baptismal and marriage records.
Robert, I found on page 73, from the Line of Henry, a reference to a George Edwin Devendorf, son of Henry A. Devendorf and Helen Eppie; Henry of Currytown. This entry shows his wife as Lina Coleman; child shown is named Hugh Edwin.
While Col. Bell calls Johannes and Henry brothers, if what is shown by Wm. H. Barker is correct, then they are instead 1st cousins and descendants of Felix Dubendorffer.
My connection to the Diefendorfs is supposedly through Johannes and Elizabeth Keller's son, called Hans George on the Bassersdorf Register, b. 1729.Col. Bell states that the son named John Hendree is actually an adopted son and attributes this to DAR records. Those references from Lineage Books do not state that he was adopted, but rather that he dropped the Diefendorf surname.I have found evidence in Philadelphia church records for a Henry Diefendorf, Marriage and baptismal records for 2 children, which match the info recorded in various records of our family.
I think there is a possibly that the John Hendree cited by Bell actually carried the baptismal name of John, was known by Heinrich or Henry or variation thereof, and simply dropped the Diefendorf name when he went to Portsmouth, VA about 1785 or so.
