Much about my family is a mystery to me, but I know my g-grandfather, Hugh Devlin (b-1824 in Tyrone) emigrated with his wife, the former Margaret Powell and at least one child, James, 10, in about 1869.They settled in Altoona, Pa., where both Hugh and James worked all their lives for the Pennsylvania Railroad in the locomotive shops.
I suspect there were more children (or perhaps other relatives in the family, since Altoona's old cemetery has many Devlin tombstones (though the Devlin name is now gone from the Altoona phone directory).
My main mysteries are where in Tyrone my family came from, on what ship did they sail and where did they land? And if I go to Ireland, are Tyrone records adequate enough to provide some answers?I read somewhere that most Tyrone records were burned up in some conflagration decades ago.
Curiously, Hugh, James and my father, Robert, all married Margarets, each in succession.
