The Dewees family is Dutch. The French connection was a result of a book written by Daniel S. Dewees, Recollections of a Lifetime, written at the turn of the century. He mentions his grandparents, John Dewees and Mary Updegrove, and that was as far as he could relate. He assumed Dewees was French and stated that in his brook. The Story parallels that of John and his brother Rev. Joshua Dewees, Revolutionaries of Delaware (who were proven Dutch descent). He states two brothers who were revolutionary soldiers from France decided to stay after the war. In actuality, they were from Germantown, PA before they moved to Delaware. I am part of the Dewees/Deweese National Research team and can provide the links to the Archives documentation.
