I am interested in the Dews/Duce and Dodgson connection that, for me, first surfaced in the 1850’s in the Macoupin/Greene counties of Illinois. I started to question why Charles Thomas Dews (son of George Dews and Hannah Snow) was taken in by Peter Dodgson as indicated in the 1860 census of Greene Co, Illinois. Peter is my grgr-granfather and was born in 1806 at Colton, Bolton Percy Parish (right next to Tadcaster/Healaugh), and immigrated to the US in 1820. I know that George Dews, the father of Charles Thomas, died in 1854 and his children apparently were "farmed" out.Even though Peter and the Illinois Dews were from the same region in Yorkshire, I looked a little deeper and found a couple of Yorkshire marriages between Dodgsons and Duces in the mid-1700’s. So there also were close family connections between the Dews/Duce and the Dodgsons. So I am hoping someone has more information about this connection, especially, about the Peter Dodgson/Charles Thomas Dews relationship. Thanks for any insight! Tom Holmdahl.
