Gaines W. Dickenson, 66, Castlewood, VA, passed away
peacefully in his sleep at his home, Sunday, November 18,
2012. He was born in Lebanon, VA, to the late Charlie Gose
and Hope Osborne Dickenson.
A graduate of Castlewood High School, class of 1964, and
Hiwassee College, class of 1966, where he met his wife
Lynda, he also attended Tennessee Technological
University, and Repperts School of Auctioneering. In
addition to his auction business, Gaines was a cattle
farmer and real estate broker. He was a life-long member
of the Fort Gibson United Methodist Church where he served
as a trustee and member of the United Methodist Men.
Gaines was very active in the Russell County Fair
Association, serving as a Director for many years and
running the General Store each year.
A Past President of the Virginia Auctioneers Association,
a member of the National Auctioneers Association and
graduate of Certified Auctioneers Institute, Gaines also
was inducted into the Virginia Auctioneers Hall of Fame
(1996) and named Virginia Auctioneer of the Year (1988).
Of his auctioneer awards, his most precious was the Jake
Horney Memorial Award.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Lynda Haun
Dickenson, formerly of Erwin, TN; one daughter, Elizabeth
Dickenson Couch (Matthew); one son, G. Wade Dickenson, II
(Jaclyn); two grandsons, Alex and Ben Couch; one grand-
daughter, Lauren Couch and soon to be born EvaGrace
Dickenson; one sister, Nancy C. Dickenson; two brothers,
Charlie Gose Dickenson, Jr. and Mark O. Dickenson.
Visitation with the family will be held from 6 p.m. to
8 p.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2012, at Castlewood Funeral
Home, Castlewood, VA.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Wednesday, November
21, 2012, at Fort Gibson United Methodist Church, 30
Church Street, Castlewood, VA, at 10:00 a.m., with Rev.
Harry Layell officiating. A committal service at the Stone
Dye Farm will occur at a later date. Pallbearers will be
Tom Cook, Sonny Crowder, Larry Culbertson, Michael Haun,
A. C. Layne, and William (Jackie) Robinson. Honorary
Pallbearers will be fellow auctioneers and Mike Collins,
Randy Eads, Dick Heatwole, Gary Lawson, Jerry Tiller, and
Scott White.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial
gifts be made to the Fort Gibson United Methodist Church
Building Fund, P. O. Box 86, Castlewood, VA 24224.
