This message I got from Steve Nicklen might interest you. His e-mail address is on the bottom. Are you sure Jean Dicaire married a squaw (a female Indian) later on in his life?
All the best, Peter Dicker ----------------------------------------------------------- Hi Peter,
I saw your postings on the web looking for Dicker family information. Firstly, please keep me posted on the progress of your book, I would be interested in a copy.
My Mothers maiden name is Dicaire and she was born here in British Columbia, Canada. In tracing her family name we have come across an interesting roadblock. It turns out that her first ancestor in Canada was actually named John Dicker, however, his son was taken by Indians and sold to the French. The French essentially renamed him Dicaire. We know this from the following baptismal record (translated from French to English):
---- Jean-Louis Dicker On Saturday April 24 of 1706 was solemly baptized by me, the undersigned priest, a young English of about 12 yrs of age son of Jean Dicker, fisher, established in Hanzerburg on the Island of Newfoundland and Sara Teckel his wife, whom had been taken by the savages last fall and ransomed from them by Mr. Louis Thomas de Junquiere, horsemaster of the Marine detachment. He had as godfather Mr. Pierre Yon Ecuyer, Lord of La Decouverte, ensign in the regiments of this country who kept the name he had carried 'Jean' and added 'Louis'.Miss Marie Madelaine Legay de Beaulieu wife of Lord Junquiere have signed with me.
Pierre Yon de la Descouverte
Madeleine Legay Meriel Priest. ----
We would like to trace our family roots further but we are at a loss as to where John Dicker came from.Interestingly, we cannot find any trace of a place called Hanzerburg (or anything close to it) in Newfoundland. If you have any information that might help us, our family would appreciate it.I sent this same informatoin to Martin Baxter, whom I notice you have already contacted.
