Further notes from my grandmother's research:
The first Dille I have record of in America is John Dille, who left Essex County, Mass. in 1664, and moved to Staten Island, NY, with other settlers from Mass. There they lived among a number of French Huguenots. John Dille was a charter member of the Puritan colony that founded Woodbridge, NJ in 1669. John Dille married Sarah ___ before 1673. They had four children; John Dille Jr was born at Woodbridge NJ in 1681; in about 1701 he married Ruth Taylor and had two children, Sarah, born in 1706 and who died at the age of 20, and David, born in 1708. David may have had a wife before Mary Elizabeth Wade. Seven of his sons served under Captain J. Miller, Washington County, Penn. militia in the Revolutionary War. They were Caleb, Price, Samuel, Israel, Isaac, David, and John.
The Dille family migrated from their home in Morris County, NJ, to Washington County, Penn., about 1766. They settled south of where Prosperity, Penn. now stands. In 1781, 23 persons organized the Upper Ten Mile Presbyterian Church, David Dille and his wife among them.
While George Washington was still president and Ohio not yet a state, Aaron, Caleb, Samuel, and John, with friends, traveled southwest, taking their families into a wilderness across the Ohio River, and founded the town of Dille in what is now Belmont County, Ohio. With the surrounding land of the Ohio Valley it became known as "Dille's Bottom". This is across the Ohio River from Moundsville, WV. Documented items show that Samuel and John were still in Belmont County in 1802.
There's more but I don't have time right now to post it all.:o)
