Coeburn, VA - Alice Robbins Dishman (nee Jordan), 93, has
gone home to rejoice with her Lord and Savior, on June 27,
2011. Alice was born to loving parents, Garfield and Cora
Alice was a member of First Baptist Church, Coeburn, as
well as a former Sunday school teacher. She taught about
Jesus' love for over 60 years. Alice served her country
during WWII by working as a sheet metal worker building
ships at Baltimore, MD, shipyard while her husband was
overseas. She has served her community by operating
Robbins' Grocery, Alice's Beauty Shop for over 60 years,
and Banner's Post Office. Alice served on the PTA in many
different capacities while raising her children; she also
served on the Library committee and in Coeburn's Women's
Club. She retired at the age of 85 to enjoy her children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Robbins;
father, Garfield Jordan; mother, Cora Johnston Jordan;
sister, Nannie Mae Davidson; brothers, J. B. Jordan,
Millard Jordan, and Clarence Jordan; son-in-law, Joe
Maples; nephews, Ralph Jordan and Guy Davidson; and niece,
Alice is survived by her husband, W. A. 'Rass' Dishman;
brothers, Arch Jordan and Stafford Jordan, of Coeburn, VA;
sister, Helen Smith, of Abingdon, VA; daughter, Carol
Maples, of Panama City, FL; sons, Ernie Robbins and wife
Nancy, of Knoxville, TN, Ronald Robbins and wife Linda, of
Clinton, TN, Gary Robbins and wife Susie, of Big Stone
Gap, VA, and Larry Robbins and wife Kathleen, of Coeburn,
VA; thirteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren;
three great- great- grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews who she considered her children.
Special thanks to the people who loved and cared for Alice
during her lifetime. A true blessing is what she has always
been to everyone around her.
The family will receive friends Thursday, June 30, 2011,
6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Sturgill Funeral Home, 310 6th
Street NW, Coeburn, VA.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Friday, July 1,
2011, in the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Coeburn, with
the Rev. R. J. Rose and the Rev. Gary Robbins officiating.
Burial will follow in the Temple Hill Memorial Park,
