My ancestor was Joseph Dix, born in 1785.He died in Columbiana Co., Ohio, in 1862.In the 1850 census he gives place of birth as New Jersey. In the 1860 census birthplace is listed as Kentucky. His children in the 1880 census state that their father (Joseph) was born in Kentucky. The death certificates of two of his daughters only add to the confusion. One states Joseph Dix, born in Vermont, the other states born in Connecticut!
Joseph, according to family tradition, came north after a falling out with his family who had settled in the south after the Revolutionary War where they had a large amount of land.He first appears in the 1830 census of Ohio in Columbiana County, with a wife and family.By 1840 he has remarried to my g.g.g. grandmother Mary Libert Shafer, a widow, and they are living in Columbiana County, Ohio.Joseph and Mary were the parents of: Henry Dix, born 1834, Hannah Dix McDanel, born 1836, John Dawson Dix, born 1837, George Libert Dix, born 1838, Rebecca Dix McDanel, born 1840, Joseph Dix, born 1841, Daniel Hutchenson Dix, born 1843, Alexander Smith Dix, born 1845, and Elizabeth Ann Dix Steen, born 1850.
Joseph Dix, Sr., was a harness-maker, coal miner in Ohio.I have no knowledge of his parents or siblings.A Bible record states that he was born July 30, 1785, and died December 6, 1862.
I would greatly appreciate any help that anyone can give me concerning this Joseph Dix.
