I have traced my family line to Abner Doane (born 1775, Bourbon County Kentucky, died 1821 Daviess County, Indiana) but have run into the usual block wall. He had a brother, James who moved to Illinois.
My lineage is John M. Doane (myself, 1955, Indianapolis, Indiana), Millard Clay Doane ( 1929, Indianapolis, Indiana), John Roscoe Doane ( 1889 Daviess County, Indiana), Millard Clay Doane (1856 Daviess County, Indiana), John Doane (1812 Kentucky, probably Bourbon County), Abner Doane (1775 Bourbon County).
As you can tell it seems we are not very imaginative when it comes to names. We seem to be stuck with a plethora of Johns, Millards and oddly enough, Elishas in the history I have managed to assemble.
I tried to name my son Millard but on the advice of my divorce lawyer I declined. Matthew Clay Doane is the closest my wife would accept. Pretty gutless decision on the part of a woman who accepted the name of "Joan Doane" as her married name, doncha' think?
