Beth,Thanks for responding and for posting all that good DOBKINS information.
If I understood correctly, we are apparently talking about the same "Alexander & Mary Ann DOBKINS family". They started out in Claiborne Co., TN. They lived in Buchanan Co., MO. from about 1844 thru 1851, and then moved to Tarrant Co., TX. I assume that the ages you listed for the family were as of 1852, since that fits correctly with almost all other records I've found. I found the William Calloway Dobkins household on the LDS on-line 1880 Census, and his mother Mary and sister Sarah were living with him. Their ages seemed slightly too young, but most other information seemed to fit nicely.
You mentioned that Alexander was the 5th of nine children of Solomon(1787-1852) and Elizabeth(d.1851) DOBKINS. Were the names of the other eight children listed in the Cecil Smythe book?
By examining Claiborne Co. marriage and Census records, it seemed possible that Alexander had 5 brothers and 4 sisters. That's one too many siblings, but is pretty close to the right number, and the old "headcount-Census" records are easily mis-interpreted. Alexander's brothers appeared to be Jacob(1811-1870), (2 unnamed brothers), Clinton(b.1832), and Marcellus(b.1836). His possible sisters were Phebe(b.1810), Barthina(b.1824), and (2 unnamed sisters). That's probably not all correct, but parts of it may be. It's the best that I can calculate from the rather sketchy on-line records.
Thanks again for posting DOBKINS information to help myself and others.
