These are part of my family ...!!
I have more family for you, if you're interested.
How exciting, I've been looking for more of "my" Dochertys for a long time, but didn't check this messageboard for them until now.
Your John Docherty, who married Mary Moran, was an older brother to my great-great-grandmother Helen/ Ellen Docherty who married John Ponsonby 23 Feb 1846 at St John’s Catholic Church, Port Glasgow, just a few months after John (her brother) married Mary Moran.
Her parents were John Docherty & Mary Diamond, from her death certificate (22 May 1908, Dumbarton), although parents are not listed on the church marriages before Civil Registration started in Scotland in 1855.
However, I have the information on the parents of John & Mary Moran as well from their death records, and "your" John was in fact a brother to "my" Helen Docherty.
Marriage for John Docherty to Mary Moran registered 04 Oct 1845 in Port Glasgow, and 10 Oct 1845 in Dumbarton.
They had 11 children, the youngest 2 daughters died in infancy, however:Mary b. 28 Jul 1846, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire; William b. 19 Apr 1848, Dumbarton; Patrick b. 15 Dec 1849, Dumbarton; John b. 03 Mar 1852, Dumbarton; Susan b. 24 May 1856, Dumbarton; Helen b. 06 Jul 1858, Dumbarton; Anthony b. 22 Apr 1860, Dumbarton; Bernard b. 10 May 1862, Dumbarton (I’m in touch with a descendant of his, in Australia); Francis b. 24 May 1864, Dumbarton; Margaret b. 13 Apr 1866, Dumbarton, died 13 Oct 1867, Dumbarton; Margaret b. 01 Dec 1868, Dumbarton, died 20 Apr 1870 Dumbarton.
Parents of John were John Docherty & Mary Diamond (same as for Helen, my great-great-grandmother), and parents for Mary Moran were Bernard Moran & Susan McLaren.
Fromthe 1851 Census of Dumbarton, John Docherty & Mary Moran were both born in County Derry, Ireland.
They came from a large family, and I have several brothers, and some of their spouses and children, but no sisters, who may not have gone to Scotland, or who may have already married before they went there, and I don't know their married names.I have too much information to post here, and wouldn’t know where to start.
John Docherty, father to John who married Mary Moran, would have been born abt. 1785, I imagine also in County Derry, although the Dohertys (spelling in Ireland) originated centuries back in County Donegal.
He died sometime between the 1851 Census, where he is listed at 10 Church Street, Dumbarton, age 65 years, with wife Mary Docherty, also age 65 years, both “born Ireland”; and the 1861 Census, in which Mary Docherty, age 75, widow, boarder, born Ireland was living with her daughter Helen and son-in-law John Ponsonby, and children.
Her name is misspelled, however, as “Docholy”, and we only found it because she happened to be staying with my great-great-grandmother & family.
Mary Docherty m.s. Diamond lived to be very old, died 23 Sep 1878 at 64 College Street, Dumbarton, age 94, and her parents are given as John Diamond, farmer, deceased, and Jane McConnachie, deceased, death registered by her son William Docherty.
I have only the brothers for Helen, no sisters.Helen, born “1827” in County Derry, was the youngest, and they moved to Scotland about 1842.One of her brothers was Francis Doherty (Scots spelling Docherty), who was married to Jane Cassidy abt. 1840 in Ireland, and they had a daughter Mary born in Ireland “abt. 1841”, before going to Scotland, where there next child James was born abt. 1844, and others after this, in Dumbarton, from the 1851 Census.I have dates, many births and baptisms. If interested, please contact me, as I have about enough to write a book, but am not finished my research.Would love to hear from other descendants!
Jane
