I came across Esther Elizabeth DODDS first in the 1861 census, ag 16, in Newcastle-on-Tyne, as the niece of Michael BLENKINSOP, my gr*3 grandfather. Her birthplace was given as France, and she was a British Subject. The same girl was found in the 1851 census, age 6, in Newburn Northumberland, as the granddaughter of John ARTHUR, again birth information was France, British subject. Her ages placed the birth year at around 1845. Further research found her parents to be William DODDS (1783-) and Jane ARTHUR (1808-). Esther married Thomas RULE on 3rd May 1870 in Newcastle; Michael BLENKINSOP was a witness. They had a few children, then she died in Bramley, Yorkshire, in 1886. I'd be interested if anyone has a connection with this family, and why Esther came to be born in France. I have not been able to find out anything further regarding her birth.
