It would be of some help and some interest if you would post information as to by whom and when the letter was written, and to whom it was addressed. If you go to findagrave.com, click on the link "search 35 million grave records" and do two searches, one on Margaret Dodds died 1846, and Joseph Dodds, died 1868, you will bring up pictures of the graves of Margaret Craig Dodds, wife of Francis Dodds, and of her son Joseph. Margaret's first husband was Gilbert Dodds, her second was Thomas Kirkpatrick and Francis Dodds was her third husband. Yes, they lived in Spartanburg, although there are a few records elsewhere. Francis filed at least one suit for debt in Union Co., SC, and his executor sold land in I think it was Greenville Co., SC, some years after his death. Neither means that they actually lived in those places, of course. The counties in IL are Sangamon and Menard. The area in KY that they moved to was Christian Co. until 1799, then Livingston until 1809, when it finally became Caldwell Co. If you go to footnote.com and get a one-month non-renewing subscription, you can download the entire pension file for Margaret Dodds as widow of Thomas Kirkpatrick. She never received a pension, and her sons were still applying to the government for it some years after her death. I assume that you are a descendant of Gilbert Dodds. I have a photo of him posted on the Web. Go to google.com. In the upper-left corner, one of the links will be images. Click that. Then enter "gilbert dodds" (in quotes, the way I have it) and robtcabb as your search terms. The first hit should be the photo I posted. This search will also bring up a photo I have posted of his brother, Joseph, my ancestor. Please either post the information about the letter or write to me directly. As stated, I am a descendant of Joseph, so I know nothing about Gilbert Dodds' wife's family.
