Barbara -My grandmother was your grandfather's sister:Adelarine Sylvia Doiron (actual spelling; called "Cy"), seventh child of Elizabeth Maude Theriault (Blue Cove postmistress) and Joseph Hyacinth Doiron. When she was in Texas visiting me in 1988, I asked her about the Doirons. She dictated the information to me and spelled names as she gave them.Joseph H. Doiron's sister Lucy (called "Madame" as a title of respect) adopted his daughter Adelarine Sylvia in 1898 (Grandmother was two years old) and brought her to the States. My mother is named after her Great Aunt Lucy.
I gather than Great Aunt Lucy was quite a character herself - she had a knack for getting husbands but not keeping them.Mr. Clarkson, who was killed in a big train wreck in about 1906 or 1907 and James Melanson.Madame and Mr. Melanson each thought the other had pots of money. At any rate, she was reasonably financially secure, to the extent that she had a summer cottage at Lake Mascoma, New Hampshire.
Here is what Grandmother gave me, which doesn't exactly match what your uncle gave you.Grandmother was 93 years old in 1988, but she had a memory like a steel trap, so my sisters and I tend to put a lot of credence in what she said.My grandmother's aside comments are typed in upper case.My comments are indicated by (*Note).
1.Evelyn "Eva" Melvina 1881 to 1981 lived to 100 years + 2 months.A NURSE WHO DIDN'T CARE FOR MEN.SHE THOUGHT THEY WERE A SPECIES BELOW US (*note from Martie-I don't agree, ok???)Housekeeper to Governor Wynant of Mass.Lived in Waltham & Plymouth, Mass, Lebanon NH.Went to California in the 1930's to live out her life.
2.Ethel OF UNFORTUNATE MEMORY.Married NH lumberman Frank Harrigan. In a lumber camp in Vermont, she began to have children and since there was no Catholic church there, she couldn't practice her religion and this made her become ill (*Note from Martie: I asked Grandmother to define "ill" and she said, "Mental".Had 3 sons: James, Francis and Phillip (Phillip was raised by Elizabeth M.Theriault Doiron, his grandmother).
3.Earl (Edward Earl)-came to Lebanon NH but returned to Blue Cove and lived on the old homestead.Married Minnie Mazarella and had a big family, among whom were Cyril, Jerome, Rena and Jeremiah
4.Albon - lived in Blue Cove.Married Mary Cowhic, a teacher (*Note from MJ-Grandmother spelled Mary's name for me as Cowhic, could be wrong as you show it as Cowhig, and after all, it is your grandmother).Had kids: David (studied for the priesthood but changed his mind), Byron (a boxer who knew Rock Graziano, Elizabeth (Beth, "Sis"), Richard, Lincoln ("Linc"), Nelly and George (the last two were twins).
5.Lida - invalid of the family.Had TB which was a death warrant in those days. Very sweet. She died December 23 (year unknown) and is buried in Lebanon next to Richard Clarkson (my grandmother's adoptive father).
6.Helen Jane ("Nelly) - Grandmother had already been adopted by Madame and Richard Clarkson, and Madame thought Cy needed a companion so they sent for Nelly (she only visited, was not adopted).Nelly married George Houston.(*Note from MJ-Albon's twins were named for this Nelly and George). They had five or six daughters, amont whom were Dorothy, Ruth, Marjorie, Katherine and Mary.
7.Adelarine Sylvia ("Cy") born 10-2-1894 in Blue Cove, Gloucester County, NB, Canada. In 1898 was adopted by her aunt Lucy (Madame). She married Dennis Thomas McCarry. They had four children: Sylvia, Richard, Lucy (b. 07-07-21)and Ruth.Sylvia and Richard died as infants.Ruth died in 1968 at age 44.Lucy is still alive, kicking and feisty in California.Grandmother died at age 94 in Nevada, where she lived with my mother.
8.Herbert born 1896.Raised in Canada.Came to US to live with Madame Clarkson. Served in the US Army.He introduced his sister Cy to her future husband.Herbert married Florence, who had a daughter by a previous marriage.Children:Stanton, Mary (Cook) and Hazel.
9.Gordon - served in the Canadian army.Injured in the war (WWII).Was the Dalhouxie harbormaster in Bathhurst, NB.Married into a family who "gave lots of their children to the church to be priests and nuns".
10.Israel Douglas Argyle Doiron - never married.HE WAS TOO SELFISH. Lived in Boston for a time with his father's sister.Ended up in California.(*Note from MJ-he contacted my mother about 15 years ago and asked her to come live with him and take care of him.Mother, having raised five children, had enough of care-taking and excused herself).I'm not sure exactly when he died, but it was after Cy died.
11.an infant that died
After Joseph Hyacinth Doiron died, his widow Elizabeth Theriault Doiron went to California (probably with her daughter Eva).SHE MET MR. CARLTON AND MARRIED HIM AND SAID IT WAS THE HAPPIEST YEAR OF HER LIFE (*Note from MJ-This was another of Grandmother's funny comments because when I asked why only a year, she said flatly, "He died").
Grandmother pronounced Joseph's middle name as "yeah-sinth"(as in the slang yeah) with the the accent on the first syllable.Being an Oklahoma girl, I'd always thought it was "hi-a-sinth".
I've been in touch with your brother lately. We lost touch for several months when my e-mail address changed. What other information have you found?I'm just now beginning to look at the Doiron message boards hither and yon, so I'm a beginner with these particular ancestors.
