My line also lived in the Pompton NJ area, Orange Co. NY, and Sussex Co. areas crossing between the two state borders. Many relatives and even members in the same families appear to have gone by various spellings. My line kept the Dowland spelling. I am not absolutely sure what is the correct or original surname spelling from the old country. There were George's and Davids in my line that went by and still go by the following variations; Dowland, Dowlan, Doland, and Dowling even though they are from the same family. Some of them were illiterate and accepted/kept spelling variations from others. When you research, check out these variations and keep in mind they may be the same person's or family.
