I have been trying to separate out the Dollars of Lincoln Co., TN and Madison/Limestone Co. AL over the past couple of years. In the process, I ran into the two women named Josie (Josephine) Dollar. This is my research, but it could have errors in it, so please doublecheck for yourself.
JOSEPHINE DOLLAR, b. ca. 1860 TN was the daughter of ELIJAH DOLLAR and ELIZABETH C. HALEY (Source:1870 Federal Census, LCT).Elijah may have been the son of JOHN DOLLAR and ZILPHA WILBANKS (and if that is the case, then John Dollar was most likely the son of REUBEN DOLLAR/MARY ANN WILBANKS), but that is just a hypothesis at this point based upon the data that I have.Elizabeth C. Haley was the daughter of CHARLES HALEYand MARY POLLY WALKER.
JOSEPHINE DOLLAR b. ca. 1860 married W. RICHARD THORNTON on 24 Dec 1885 Lincoln Co., TN.Prior to her marriage she was enumerated as follows:1870 at home with parents in Giles Co., TN--age 10.1880--at home with mother in LCT--age 16 (should be more like age 20).Josephine and W. Richard Thornton had no children. They were enumerated together in Lauderdale Co., AL in 1900.Also in their household was DAVID CLEM, age 10 and JACK COWAN, age 20, listed as boarders.(Elijah Dollar had a nephew John Dollar, who married Eliza Jane Eaves.Eliza Jane's mother was a Clem, so David Clem is likely some sort of relation.Jack Cowan was very likely a son of Andrew Johnson Cowan and Martha Jane Dollar...and was therefore Josephine's nephew).BY 1910, Josie and W.R. Thornton were back in Limestone Co., AL.I did not follow them beyond that date.
JOSEPHINE DOLLAR, b. ca. 1866 was the daughter of JOSIAH SILAS DOLLAR and MARTHA STOVALL and the granddaughter of Elijah Dollar/Elizabeth Haley (Source:1870 Federal Census, Giles Co., TN).Josie was enumerated as follows:1870--at home with parents in Giles Co., TN.1880--at home with parents in Lincoln Co., TN.Per other researchers, this Josie had a family with ANDREW JOHNSON COWAN, which resulted in seven children:Nina T., Andrew, John F., James Walter, Jefferson, Ethel Mae & Retha L.I do not believe Josie and A.J. married as A.J. Cowan was married toMARTHA JANE DOLLAR (daughter of Elijah Dollar and Elizabeth Haley) on 22 Aug 1875 in LCT and he remained married to her during the time that he was also having children with Josie Dollar. It is also notable that Josie and A.J. Cowan's children carried the Dollar surname, not Cowan.Additionally, Josie was listed in census records as "single" and was always enumerated alone with her children and no male head of household. So, A. J. Cowan appears to have had two families--one with Martha Jane Dollar and one with Martha's niece, Josephine Dollar, b. ca. 1866.By 1900, Josie was enumerated in Limestone Co., AL.In 1910, Josephine was 44, with 5 children and one grandchild, Raymond Cottrell, in her household (probably from daughter, Nina, who must be deceased).By 1920, she was still in Limestone, but living with her son, John F. Dollar.Several other children were living nearby--Jeff, Andrew and James Walter.
Andrew Johnson Cowan had 12 children with Martha Jane Dollar.Because their births fell between the 1880 and 1900 census years, I have only been able to identify six:James E., Troy, Nellie, Belle, Emma & Maude.A.J. and Martha were enumerated together in 1900, 1910 & 1920.
Interestingly, though A.J. and Martha are on record as marrying in 1875, I could not find them in census records in 1880.However, there is an A.J. Cowan (of the correct age to be the husband of Martha Jane Dollar) with wife Priscilla in the 1880 Federal Census for Lincoln Co., TN.There is additionally a marriage record for an A.J. Cowan and Priscilla Clark, 27 Dec 1877 in LCT.It doesn't seem that this could be the same A.J. Cowan (already married to Martha Jane Dollar in 1875), but I can't really verify this one way or the other.
Where were A.J. Cowan and Martha Jane Dollar in 1880?
Andrew Johnson Cowan is believed to be the son of Harvey C. Cowan and Agnes B. McDaniel. This couple married 22 Dec 1842 in LCT and they have a son, Andrew, ages 1 and 12, respectively, in the 1850 and 1860 Federal Censuses for LCT.
My connection to these people is via Elijah Dollar and Elizabeth Haley.Elizabeth Haley is my GGG Aunt, sister of my GGG grandma, Martha Patsy Haley who married Reuben Wilbanks.Martha Patsy and Reuben Wilbanks resided in LCT from about 1830 to 1857, when they migrated to Saline Co., AR.I am interested in learning more about these Dollar families, particularly as they relate to Wilbanks and Haley.
I have no further info on the Cowans. As the father of 19 children by two women, it surely seems that there should be records related to A.J. Cowan in LCT or Limestone Co., AL.
For those who have an interest, I do have further info on Elijah Dollar's possible siblings as well as other children born to him and Elizabeth C. Haley.
If anyone can locate Elijah Dollar prior to 1860, I would be very interested in that data.Elijah was born ca. 1815 in TN or AL.He died in 1884 and is buried in New Grove Cemetery, Blanche, LCT.
Please advise me of any corrections! This has been a really tricky family to figure out!
