Hi Dianna, The name is most likely of Scottish origins. On the marriage record of my 5th grt. grandmother Elizabeth DONNELL, he last name was spelled Donald.I believe the name might have originally been MacDonald and for some reason they just shortened it to Donnell and Dunnell as is seen in York Co., Maine. Many of the Scottish POW families who came to MA during Cromwell's captures (1650 and 1651) from the Battles at Dunbar and Worcester, Scotland, were indentured servants working in Lumberyards and sawmills and some like my own ancient ancestor Ingram MOODIE worked at Saugus Iron Works in Lynn, Essex Co., MA. I have researched many of these Scot families and noted that they all pretty much seemed to stick together, marry into each others families and move to the same areas. Good Luck to you in your searching.
