Job Scott DONNELL b. c1810 in Maine appears to have been a son of Jonathan Sargent DONNELL (whose mother appears to have been a Susannah SARGENT ??). Jonathan married Rebecca MELCHER (details very sketchy). From an 1898 genealogy on the Alexander family of Maine comes the following info.: Isabella H. RAYMOND daughter of Aletta (Alexander) RAYMOND, married Jan. 1830 (the book is in error stating 1850), and another source has their marriage as May 1, 1830. Job died in 1853.Isabella married 2nd to an Alonzo C. PECK in 1859. Only known child by Job, her 1st husband, was daughter Orianna Putnam DONNELL born Nov. 15, 1850....however given the error in the Marriage year, I would sooner believer the daughter was born in 1830.
Aletta (Alexander) RAYMOND was b. March 31, 1802, daughter of William ALEXANDER (David, William, David 1 Alexander who was born in Scotland and fled to Ulster, Ireland and then came to Topsham, Sagadahoc Co., Maine) Aletta married Anthony Coombs RAYMOND son of Edward Raymond and Lydia Coombs (daugh. of Anthony Coombs) of Harpswell. Anthony Raymond was born June 21, 1798 and d. June 13, 1879.Aletta d. Sept. 21, 1830. Three Children: Mary Ann b. 1821 ISABELLA H. b. 1823 and Edward C. RAYMOND b. 1828.
I have that Isabella lived in Everett, MA and prob. died there as well.
VR's of Brunswick (source IGI which gave the marriage records citing the Brunswick Town Clerk) for Jonathn S. DONNELL and Rebekah [sic] MELCHER was March 8, 1803 in Brunswick, Cumberland Co., Maine.I believe Jonathan Sargent DONNELL must have been born around c1780. Also my 5th grt. grandmother who was a Donnell even though on her marriage record from Buxton, ME it was spelled DONALD, now making me think that she didn't belong to the Donnell bunch at all but possibly from a MacDONALD who was most likely a Scottish POW sent to MA or ME during the Cromwellian years of captured men at Dunbar and Worcester in Scotland 1650 & 1651, and that she may be part of another line. Her brother's marriage record has his name as DONALD as well. There were MacDONALD's attending the same church and now I wonder if perhaps her lineage might not have been from them. Especially after reading Senator Mark Hill DUNNELL's testimony on his family roots whereby he stated his family was from the MacDonald clan originally in Scotland.
I think there must have been some ~blurring~ of the family lines between these two somehow which has totally screwed up the possibility of ever truly sorting them out.
I have noticed a pattern, at least among my own family, that they married into several of the other Scottish families. The Scots already being "clan-ish", this makes sense to me as they stuck together to preserve their Scottish traditions and habits etc. I have found this to be the case over and over within my Own family line anyway.I was given the descendancy of my Elizabeth DONALD (Donnell/Dunnell) from others who were more versed in this family than I am, but now I have to wonder if its not in error at least regarding my own link.
I have been studying the Scot POW families for the last 2 years now fairly non-stop and one thing is that most of them were uneducated and could not spell, much less write their own names.Due to their heavy Scottish accents which most of the English who were already here, were having a hard time understanding in order to write down their names, often times spelled the names just how they sounded to them. Many of the Scot POW's dropped the "Mac" and "Mc" from their names when they came here, and many did afterwards in an effort to detach themselves from the stigma's that followed and plagued them because they were Scots and many came to this country as indentured servants.
When the name DONALD would be spoken in a heavy Scottish accent, it would come out sounding something like Dunnell or Donnell. This may be how my OWN Donald family mistakenly fell under the line of the DONNELL's. This is all just conjecture on my part for the moment, but as many of the Scot POW families were in York Co., ME, nothing would surprise me at this point. It wouldn't be the first time I had to change my family genealogy around due to the Scot POW's intermarriage with my family.
If anyone knows who the Parents of Jonathan Sargent DONNELL were, please leave a message here as I believe the Brunswick, ME connection may be a link to my own Elizabeth Donald's family. Thank You.
