Arthur C. DONNELL - from old book History of Bath [ME] & Environs 1894

Since this latest info pertains to this line of Arthur C. DONNELL I am posting to this message that I first placed here back in 2005.
Its taken me 3 years to find this additional information that continues to support my gut feelings for years that my 5th grt. grandmother Elizabeth DONALD's (as her last name was originally spelled before evolving into the more commonly seen DONNELL) family was originally from Scotland and Probably Not a branch of the Henry DONNELL line of York Co., ME.
The furthest back on her family I have been able to connect to with Solid Documented Proof is to my 7th grt. grandparents Capt. Nathaniel DONALD/Donnell (found spelled both ways in Maine documentation) and Elizabeth TODD who came to Maine from Rowley, Essex Co., MA. They had my 6th grt. grandfather Capt. Benjamin DONALD/Donnell and he married Sarah KINGSBURY. For a time they lived in York Co., ME and some of their children married in and attended the Church of Christ (Congregational) in Buxton, York Co., ME, where I have found their last name spelled as "DONALD" in those old church records. My 5th grt. grandparents Elizabeth DONALD (as her name reads on her marriage record as recorded by the Rev. Paul COFFIN who married them in his church in Buxton), and James MOODY were married in that church on Jan. 13, 1774.
Elizabeth's father Capt. Benjamin Donald/Donnell was a sea Captain and owned his own ship. Just prior to the outbreak of the Rev. War he took his family out of York, ME for safety's sake up to Georgetown/Bath, Lincoln Co., ME where his father Capt. Nathaniel DONALD/Donnell was also living and died. (Lincoln Co., ME Probate records and deeds of Wiscasset, and nearby areas in Bath and West Bath show the numerous amounts of land he owned there and donated for the Witch Spring Cemetery and Bridges etc. to be built).
The Donnell house which was either called "Elmhurst" by them when they lived there in 1734 (in Bath) or later named this by another family who lived there after Capt. Nathaniel Donnell, I cannot be certain, but the house or "mansion" as it was called in the old book the History of Bath and Its Environs by Parker McCobb Reed publ. in 1894, said that the house was located on High Street in Bath and that later Capt. Nathaniel Donnell's relative Capt. Benjamin Donnell lived there, who was actually his son.
Having said all of that, I now continue on with the latest info I have found regarding the Arthur C. DONNELL as his last name is shown to be spelled.
This latest info comes from the old book called The Genealogy of the Loveland Family in the United States of America from 1635 to 1894 Containing the Descendants of Thomas Loveland of Wethersfield, Now Glastonbury, CT by J. B. Loveland, Fremont O., and George Loveland of Wilkes-Barre, PA - Vol. II publ. in 1894.
It states that Susan H. LOVELAND (Timothy > Joel) was b. at Chatham, MA on June 10, 1812 and married there on April 12, 1832 to Arthur DONNELL who was born at Bath, Maine on Jan. 25, 1808. She died in Bath on Aug. 16, 1875.Mr. Donnell was a cooper by trade and commenced business with twenty five cents. He was a great sufferer with the Ashthma and died at the age of sixty from this complication. He owned largely in real estate and was respected as an honest, upright business man. His Father Jonathan Donnell was of SCOTCH descent a man highly respected who served tow years in the Maine Legislature and through his influence, the town of West Bath was set off from Bath two and one half miles distant. It was very desirable to have it done due to a high rate of taxes. He (Jonathan) died at the age of 70 years. His wife Rebecca MELCHER was a very quiet retiring woman and gifted with great natural abilities. She was a direct descendant of the Puritans, and reached the great age of 94 years and retained the full use of her faculties up til two weeks of her death.
Arthur was her 3rd son and possessed many of his Mother's traits.
CHILDREN of Arthur Donnell and Susan Loveland all born at Bath, ME were:

4- Zidana True Donnell b. Oct. 16, 1840 m 1st to Edward L. DAYTON, married 2nd to Enoch M. REED.
5- Henry Scott Donnell b. Oct. 14, 1844 m. in San Jose, CAL in Feb. 1878 to ______? He is a civil engineer on the North Pacific Rail Road, Oregon.

11- Frederick Doane DONNELL b. Nov. 10, 1855 a Civil Engineer on the N.P.R.R., Oregon. Unmarried.
The daughter above named Zidana T. Donnell...there is this bit more about her - born in Bath, ME on Oct. 16, 1840 married in New York City on June 8, 1868 to Edward L. DAYTON of NY City, he died June 16, 1868 (wow, only a week after marriage, how awful). She married 2nd in Bath, ME on Oct. 12, 1869 to Enoch M. REED of Bath. Children born at Bath by her 2nd husband-
1- Arthur Donnell REED b. July 19, 1872
2- Susan Loveland REED b. Oct. 25, 1875

************************************************
Interestingly my 5th grt. grandmother's brother Nathaniel DONALD/Donnell who was born in York, York Co., ME c1748 married c1777 to Susannah SARGENT daughter of Jonathan b. c1726 who was of Bath, ME. This Nathaniel died Oct. 28, 1783 prob. in the Bath, ME area.
The naming of a son above of Jonathan Sargent DONNELL who was b. in 1832 to Arthur Donnell, further supports the closeness of this family line.
Another sister of my 5th grt. grandmother's was Hannah DONNELL b. Oct. 6, 1751 and she married 1st to Dr. Samuel DUNCAN in Brunswick, Cumberland Co., ME (per Brunswick VR's) but they lived in Bath, ME. When Dr. Samuel Duncan died, Hannah married 2nd to Dr. Caleb SAMSON (Sampson?).
Another sister of my 5th grt. grandmother's Lydia DONNELL b. Jan. 20, 1760 married John DUNCAN, their Marriage Intent was published in Brunswick, ME but no record of their marriage was found there so its probable that they married in Bath or Georgetown, Lincoln, ME.
A brother of my 5th grt. grandmother's (Elizabeth Donald/Donnell) Moses DONNELL b. May 25, 1757 in York Co., ME married in 1783 to Hannah BRIGHT. Moses died April 7, 1818 in Wiscasset, Lincoln Co., ME. They had a son named Moses DONNELL who married a Martha CUNNINGHAM. Moses became the Rev. Moses Donnell who was the minister at the Methodist-Episcopal Church in Wiscasset, ME (the one with the clock tower). He died there around c1861 at age 72 years old.
Another significant link in my family tree is that my 5th grt. grandparents daughter Sarah "Sally" MOODY b. June 1774 married Simon NEWCOMB and they lived for a short time in Buxton, ME but removed to Harrison, Cumberland Co., ME where they died.
Simon NEWCOMB's brother Benjamin NEWCOMB who was b. c1772 married on Nov. 7, 1793 in the same Church in Buxton, ME where my 5th grt. grandparents were married, to Sarah LEWIS who was b. 1776. Her Parents were Abijah LEWIS and Rebecca MELCHER. I have an idea that this Rebecca MELCHER is probably related to the same line MELCHER's that the above Rebecca MELCHER was who married Jonathan DONNELL as these Scots seemed to clan together and married into the same circle of families.
As a last note I can say that our MOODY line does Not link to any of the now numerously ydna tested Moody lines that hail from England. Those are among the most populous so far within our Ydna project. We remain one of a small group of Moody's with Norse ancient lineage lines. Norway being closest to the Orkney Isles of Scotland, which is where the MOODIE's of that area claim to descend from as well (the Norwegians), I feel somehow someway we must be linked to them, but no solid proof has come up yet that I am aware of.
The one Moodie person who has been tested from the Shetland Isles but who matches ydna to No One else in the project is also of a common "Viking" haplotype but one of extreme rarity, does not match to us. We now have 10 people in our small group who all share the same Haplotype. Two of those participants are of other Surnames but both surnames can be traced back to Scotland and one of them has been found in another form of the spelling; in old Norway records, so this makes sense. Spellings of names have changed over the ages so many times, that I don't give them much solid attention anymore. I believe our last name was at one time spelled MOODIE but when so many of our ancestors ended up in Nor. Ireland the name became more commonly spelled in the English way of MOODY.
Our earliest Ydna ancestor remains Thomas MOODY b.c1710 in/of Aghadowey, Co. Londonderry, Nor. Ireland who married 1st to Jean McQUISTON (spelled McCuiston in the South), daug. of Benjamin McQUISTON whose family also came over to Nor. Ireland from Scotland.
Thomas and family landed in New Castle, DE/PA in 1735 and removed to Guilford Co., NC and their descendants disbursed all over the South and some went to OH, KS, and out West and I believe some even went North.
The DONNELL's are also found in Guilford Co., NC having come over from Nor. Ireland with these families and have married into some of the same families as our ydna Moody's and McQuiston's.Even more ironically, some of the branches of these Donnell's ended up in Lincoln Co., Maine married into another Scottish branch of the MOODY family there. While our ydna groups does Not share ydna with this branch of the other Scottish MOODY family, we Do share the Same HaploGROUP of which I have been told our branch of Moody's cracked off from some thousands of years after them which formed our branch of the Haplo-Tree.
At any rate, these Ulster-Scots landed in America in the early to mid 1700's and spread out all over. Many families were separated when the ships sailed for America and Loads of ads were placed in newspapers trying to locate loved ones. So many of them had to travel great distances to connect back with their family members. I believe this is why some of them appear in one place, then disappear for a while only to reappear somewhere else in the United States.
It makes tracking ones Ulster-Scot relatives extremely difficult. I have never found the family of my 5th grt. grandfather James MOODY (b.c1750 or Before), but he either came over with the Ulster-Scots and his Parents or family members, came from Scotland, came by himself on board some ship landing at someplace perhaps unrecorded or lost by time or war or weather damages, or something else.
At any rate I have never been able to locate or make any connections with any of the old records of any James MOODY's/Moodie's/Mudie's I have seen so far with any certainty.
There are a couple of very strong possibilities however. One remains to be that he descends from the line of Joshua R. MOODIE of Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland who came to the Lake Umbagog region of Oxford/Franklin Co., Maine in the 1690's. He was known to have several sons some of whose names are not known, but the name of "James" is used repeatedly in the descendants of this line.
That they were in Maine at this early time could be that somehow my James' family became obsorbed into the 3 other Major MOODY lineage lines that inhabited all of these same places in New England. (the John Moody line of Hartford, CT had descendants living in ME, NH and VT all at the same time that the Wm. Moody line of Newbury, MA did and the Clement Moody of Exeter, NH line). We do not share ydna with any of these 3 major lines and these 3 major MOODY lineage lines are NOT related to each other either as so many have summized over the centuries in numerous genealogies and history books.Ydna has now shown that John is Not related to William and they are Not related to Clement at least not by any common ancestor, they are of 3 different HaploGroups and HaploTypes.
This is very lengthy I know, but this is a basic summary of our link to the DONALD/Donnell family and why I still believe we or My branch of the Donald's are of Scottish descent. They may have come over via ship from England but I still believe the core of their family was originally Scottish, at least for my branch.
One last question...does anyone know who the Jonathan DONNELL was that married Rebecca MELCHER? Who his Parents were?
Thank you for any help.
