The earliest of our Dorsett ancestors to arrive in America was Francis Dorset.Records of English Baptisms in the early 18th century list the christening of a Francis Dorset, son of Mary and Philip Dorset, in 1717.
Francis Dorsett is my great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather.Francis Dorsett arrived in Prince George's County, Maryland in 1734.There he married Jane Prather, who later died.He moved to Chatham County, North Carolina, in 1759 and married Rebecca McSwain. They had at least five children, John, Solomon, Henry, Francis, and Nancy.
The History of Chatham County, North Carolina reports that, Francis established his home on the east side of the Rocky River.Other records indicate his residence was near the settlement of Pittsboro.Francis was a Baptist Minister.
Between 1765 - 1771, Francis was a prominent member of the "Regulators."(See the following link for more information on the "Regulators".http://www.idiotsguides.com/Chapters/0028633792_CIG_Amer_Rev/file.htmhttp://www.idiotsguides.com/Chapters/0028633792_CIG_Amer_Rev/file.htm)
We do not know when the Dorsets changed the spelling of their surname to "Dorsett," but records show that some family members spelled their name with the single "t" while others used the double "t."By the War of 1812, our ancestors were all spelling their surname with the double "t."
Francis' son, Solomon Dorset married Susannah Dutyprior to 1800.They had at least two sons, Francis and Duty.Solomon's sons, Duty and Francis, married two of James Edward's daughters, (Rachel and Rebecca).
Duty Dorsett was born November 12, 1797.He married Rachel Edwards on September 12, 1813.He died on May 3, 1844.Duty and Rachel had many children including: Abijah, Solomon, Rebecca and Hannah.
In 1840, Duty Dorsett along with other members of the Dorsett and Duty clan moved to Indiana to take advantage of free land offered by the government for those who would settle Indiana.
Several other members of the Dorsett family moved to other areas of the Country, eventually settling in Kentucky and Texas.
