This is one of those weird stories ... my g-g-g-grandmother is MARTHA SPEED SHUFFIELD. She was born 10 Mar 1828 and married James S. SHUFFIELD. We have always thought her maiden name was SPEED based on her gravemarker which listed her name was MARTHA SPEED SHUFFIELD.
I have NEVER been able to find her in any SPEED family on any census in GA. So, I did a wildcat search on Ancestry.com for census on the name SPEED and I found:
1840 Census - DORTCH, SPEED D. Franklin County GA p. 315, 267th District
The last name is listed as "Dortch" ... that's what caught my eye. I only looked in the printed indexes under the surname SPEED. Why did this catch my eye? James S. Shuffield and Martha Speed Shuffield have a grandchild named "DORCHIE SPEED Shuffield" (b: MAR 1887 in Milam Co., TX d: 30 AUG 1926 in McLennan Co., TX).
So, now I'm researching the DORTCH family to see if there is any way to place Martha in that family thinking that SPEED is really her middle name and DORTCH is her surname.
Any ideas/hints/suggestions ... Am I grasping at straws? The names are just too similar to dismiss without invesitgation.
