Dossett name origin
I wrote to the forum about 10 years ago regarding the Dossett name origin with little to no response. I'm hoping others will chime in with their knowledge of what they know. The little research I have put together is our original name was Doucette from France. During the French Huganaut movement in the 1700's, and before, thousands of Protestant Huganauts fled France; many coming to America.
The immigration authorities in the U.S., asking for the name of the French person or persons, may have spelled the last name phonetically, depending on how the name was pronouced, from Doucette but spelled Dossett by the immigration people.
Many French Huganauts settled in Nova Scotia. In the mid 1700'sEnglish soldiers were ordered to remove the French people by boat from Nove Scotia to the state Maryland.
My ancestors, apparently three brothers, may have been among this group from Nova Scotia. From Maryland, One brother traveled south, another north and the third stayed in the area settling in Virginia. My great-great grandfather was James Dossett born March 21, 1801. He married Tonzy Williams and they had 10 children, one of whom was John T. Dossett. I do not know the parents or other ancestors prior to James Dossett.
In the late 1830's, the James Dossett and two other families (Butt and ? families) moved to Knox Co., Persifer Township,Illinois. They homesteaded several parcels for over 50 years. John T. married Melissa Lorance and they had 9 children. Son Charles W. Dossett was my grandfather. Around 1893, John T. and most of his family pulled up roots and moved to Tacoma, Wa.. John T., Melissa and many of his children are buried in the old Tacoma Cemetery.
My hope is other Dossett relatives will add to this ancestry with their knowledge and information. Looking forward to your replies!
Paul Gene Dossett
