I’m trying to establish contact with surviving relatives of Neil, Patrick, or Dennis Dougherty who we believe were brothers of my wife's maternal grandmother, Anne (A.K.A. - Annie) Dougherty.Anne lived in the Philadelphia, PAarea for most of her life since arriving in the states from Ireland sometime in the early 1920s. She did not reveal many facts to her family and in many cases hid facts on family members, dates, etc. We’re not 100% sure of all of her brothers names as listed above, but we do know that she traveled several times to visit a brother (or brothers) in the San Francisco, CA area. These trips were made in the 1950s and the 1960s.We have pictures with dates but no notations about with whom or where they were taken in CA.We believe that Patrick or Neil was the CA brother she visited.
Here are what little facts we know:(1) Anne who was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 3/24/1897, and then moved at an early age to Ireland (maybe Donegal). She died in Jan. 1983 in Newtown Square, PA. (2) Birth and death confirmed via search on SSN#. (3) Her father’s name was James Dougherty and her mother’s name was Mary Gallagher.(4) She arrived through Ellis Island (search there was unsuccessful) before April 1923 (We have a picture of her dated April 1923 in Atlantic City, NJ.)(5) On 6/3/1924 she gave birth to Mary Ann Dougherty probably in the Phila. PA. area. She was never married to our knowledge. (6) She gave birth to another daughter, Betty Dougherty, 5 to 7 years later. We’re assuming that she did not tell her brothers about her two daughters.(7) The years from when she arrived in the states to the 1950s are a real mystery. We know she worked as a housekeeper for a Harvey Thomas in Edgemont, PA.Mr. Thomas was a wealthy man and a Quaker. (8) Sometime in the early 50s she worked for a Roosevelt family that was supposedly linked to the Theodore Roosevelt family. (9) In the late 1950s, she began working for the Groskin or Groskins family who lived on 210 Glen Road in Ardmore, PA.Later she worked for Gladys Groskins in Wayne, PA. (10) She retired in the 70s and moved in with her daughter Mary (Dougherty) Reilly in Newtown Square, PA.(11) We know that she had a twin brother who died at the age of 6 months. She had a sister Bridget who remained in Ireland and died in the 1960s.(12) Her CA brother (Neal or Patrick?) may have had 2 sons who were twins and one of them may have had twins themselves. (We're just guessing the "may have" facts by looking at old pictures that do not have any names, dates, or locations on them.) (13) We believe she made a trip back to Ireland in 1951 and again in the 1960s.We think she made trips to visit family in San Francisco in the mid-60s.***In summary, we don't know much about her.She was very secretive. Both of her daughters died also. We're just trying to gather some facts about a mysterious family member.Any help or ideas you have would be appreciated.Sincerely, Rob and Pat Neumer, Waldord, MD.
