Children of Celia Dover & Jesse Cross, Habersham Co, GA
I am copying much from my website because I would like to settle once & for all, the myth that Thomas Jefferson Cross (Born: 1822) and John Robert Cross (Born: 1823) are NOT the sons of Celia Dover & Jesse Cross.
BTW, there is no "Manoish" in the CROSS family lines, at least not mine. Maybe in the line belonging to Thomas Jefferson & John Robert Cross, but not in the Jesse Cross line.
Links to my website are in the body below.
I really hope this settles the myth. I hate to see inaccurate info continually being put forth.

Hi Sherry,
I recently updated my notes on the Jesse Cross / Celia Dover family. Actually we have made some new discoveries on our Cross line at this time.We were recently able to PROVE the parents of Jesse Cross because of some deed finds by Becky Bradley of AL who is also a Cross researcher, as well as add another documented sister to the group -

NOTE:The Dover spouses named here are siblings and the children of Francis J Dover who was a Rev War Sol born 1760/61 near the Haw River in NC.He resided 1 mile from the Kings Mountain Battleground in York Dist SC at the time of his enlistment. From there he lived in Pendleton Dist SC until he and his family moved to Habersham Co, GA where they first appear in 1820.It is said that his first wife and mother of his children was " a Posey" and court documentation of 1838 says that his 2nd wife was Mary Mullinax. We have not found a marriage record for either marriage.
The family knowledge that places your William Stephen Cross and his brother Henry who came to TX as the children of Jesse Cross / Celia Dover came in the form of notes that were shared with me by a Jesse Cross descendant, Ralph Cross. We had known about these notes for years, but until I actually had a copy of the handwritten notes, I was not completely sure about the original source and just how accurate they might be.*~*William Gus Cross*~* was a grandson of Jesse & Celia Cross and I would think he would be quite accurate about knowing who his father's siblings would have been. These notes, along with some other data that had been shared by a couple of researchers from the 1980's period that Ralph also sent at that time, finally clarified just who knew what and when. Here are my updated notes on this family and you have my permission to post them if you'd like. These notes started out from bits and pieces of info collected from many different sources over the time that I have been researching.A few years ago I took all of those pieces and started putting census and other records to them and with the help of other Cross researchers at the time, this is what evolved---

HISTORY IN CATOOSA COUNTY, GA. by William H H Clark.
pg44.
"Robert and JESSE CROSS, two brothers, in 1832 settled at or near Woodstation. In 1835 Robert Cross sold out to Woods and purchased the place that Robert Magill lived on, five miles north of Ringgold, and after a couple of years, sold it back to Robert Magill. Cross then moved near to Woodstation and died about 1841.He was the representative from Walker county for one session of the legislature and a pretty shrewd man.
JESSE CROSS cared nothing for an overgrown fortune and kept a pack of bear dogs.Long after all the bears, panthers, wild cats and catamounts had emigrated from this section, he still caried his gun and dogs wherever he went.About 1845 he leased lands in Houston Valley from Dick Cruce. He was still expecting to meet a bear when we left Georgia.Like other hunters, he never amassed a great fortune."
on pg 70.
Robert Cross, in 1832, settled near Woodstation. In 1835 he sold to John Woods and moved to the place where Robert Magill lived in Dogwood Valley.Woods was a local Methodist minister, a merchant for several years and a good man."
pg 60.
" Mr. Lungino was the father of Mrs Robert Cross and made his home with her". (per Bobbie Jean Frank)
Another excerpt from Clark's book about Mr Longino (don't have the page #) --
"We have omitted one incident of the earliest settlers.Mr. LUNGINO was the father of Mrs. Robert CROSS and made his home with her.In 1835 there were two noted cold days long known as the cold Friday and Saturday. LUNGINO was an old man and had started to go to Jackson county in a one-horse wagon, then called a carry-all.He got to Judge KENNAN's mill pond, near Buzzard Roost, tied his horse, stripped off his clothes and waded the pond until he froze to death. He was buried at the grave yard near Dogwood Church. He or Alfred DUNN was the first person burried there. Alfred DUNN was near the writers age and was much loved by him.. He died of flux, a disease then very common.John B. DUNN will remember which was burried first and someone in the future may feel an interest in knowing the fact."
NOTE:The following was sent to me by another researcher about the history of Clarks book---
I wanted to point out where Wm Clark got his info on early settlers in Catoosa County.
Chapter 11 Pg. 36
Early Settlers Of Catoosa, Whitfield, Walker And Floyd (Armuchee)
The Dogwood and Houston Valleys were the first areas of the county to be settled. Among the first families were two unrelatedfamilies named Head and between the two, they made up a sizable percentage of the early population.
Sometime in the latter 1800s, a member of the Head Family was asked to write in the county paper his memories of the early times and first settlers of Catoosa, Whitfield, Walker, and the surrounding areas. He did this but all copies of the paper and all evidence of his articles disappeared, almost. Mr. John Dawling, a lifetime resident of the county and the last of our Cvil War veterans, had clipped the articles from the paper and had pasted them into a scrapbook which he kept for several years.
It goes on to state that a Judge McDaniel copied the articles and presented them to the writer(Clark) in 1971. He states that he presents them in his book without editorial change and just as it was written 100 years ago.

NOTE: Who was the elderly couple living with Jesse & Celia (Dover) Cross? Was it Jesse's parents John & Nancy Cross? We haven't found them after they left Henry Co, GA.
School records indicate that Jesse and Celia were still in Habersham Co, GA in 1834.On 4 Dec 1834, in Habersham Co, GA,Francis J Dover (FJD) signed a deed that literally gave everything he had to his son Anderson Dover. This deed reads like a will, including crops and even money that was owed to FJD.This has always been such a curious thing to us because FJD didn't actually die until 1851.Bobbie Jean Frank has speculated that perhaps since this is around the time that FJD was trying to file a claim as a Rev War Sol, that maybe he did this in order to be considered indigent. That could make sense. The older couple in the household of Jesse Cross / Celia Dover is a male 80 - 90 and a female 70 - 80 living with them.Could this have been FJD / Mary Mullinax??The 1840 Habersham Co, GA censusp 153 showsFJD age 70 - 80 and female age 70 - 80.It is possible that FJD moved along with Jesse and Celia to Walker Co, GA and returned to Habersham Co, GA in time to be included in 1840 census records there as well??Or maybe they were just over there visiting??William Simpson Dover s/o FJD and a lot of other family relations were also included in the 1840 Walker Co, GA census.FJD appears without wife Mary (Mullinax) in the household of Thomas Cross / Rebecca Dover (his dau) in 1850 Hab Co, GA.
The identity of this older couple still remains a mystery.

I have no idea still what the Womack meant in the info given by Wm Gus Cross. I also have noticed in this passage that it mentions that "Marion Cross, Now 1954 lives in TX" --- so, it looks to me like someone else has made additions to what Wm Gus Cross gave in 1934 since he died in 1945. Maybe that's the reason for some of the discrepancies in some of the later data?
At this time we have pretty basically completed updating the notes and census records for all the children of Jesse Cross / Celia Dover.

Known Children of Jesse Cross with Nancy Brown --
9Martha " Patsey" Cross (this one had to have been a child of Nancy Brown when they married)
10Susannah E Cross md John Fare / Farr
11Thomas Cross md Sherrells Womack
NOTE: Martha "Patsy" Cross was the dau of Nancy Ann Brown prior to her marriage with Jesse Cross. Cynthia Ann Sherrills was the d/o Wm and Ruth (Morris) Sherrills who married son Thomas Cross.
